Through the blessings of..., if one creates a hundredfold of virtuous roots. What is the reason for this? It is because the Tathagatas do not abandon all sentient beings. Therefore, it is said that Bodhisattvas with great aspirations do not completely enter into Nirvana. There are two types of those without the potential (for enlightenment): those who depend on the end of time and those who are eternal. Therefore, in the Ornament of the Sutras, it says that there are two types of things that do not enter Nirvana: those that depend on the end of time and those that are eternal. The Holy Lankavatara Sutra speaks from the perspective of the former, while the Yogacarabhumi-sastra explains it from the perspective of the latter, and there is no contradiction. Furthermore, the Holy Lankavatara Sutra divides beings with potential into two types: the first is those who have abandoned the roots of virtue, which depends on the end of time. The second is the eternal, which is shown to be the compassionate heart of the Bodhisattva. Therefore, it is not like the Ornament of the Sutras, which speaks of the eternally without potential. When these two vehicles of definite potential enter the realm without remainder, are they sentient beings? Or are they said to be non-sentient beings? They are not included by sentient beings, because there is no manifest consciousness. If that is the case, then there would be the fault of sentient beings decreasing. What is the reason for this? Because without a beginning there is no increase, and without an end there is no decrease. If increase exists, then decrease must also exist. If decrease exists, why does the Sutra say that all sentient beings neither increase nor decrease? If one previously said that there is increase and decrease, then even if one should be blamed later, saying increase and decrease, there are two explanations for this. The first is that teachers like Truthful One, etc., rely on their respective treatises and show four possibilities: the first is to believe that there is a beginning but no end, like the Vinaya-vibhasa which says that there is no dharma of entering nirvana. The second is to believe that there is no beginning but there is an end, such as the Sarvastivadins and...

It is like the treatises of the Vaibhashika school, which uphold the Sutra Pitaka. The third is the view that there is a beginning and an end, such as the statement in the Vinaya-pitaka of the Sarvastivada school that they possess the nature of passing into nirvana. The fourth is the view that there is no beginning and no end, as stated in the treatises of the Sautrantika school, which uphold the Sutra Pitaka, that they do not possess the nature of passing into nirvana, and as stated in the Mahayana treatises that all sentient beings are without beginning and end. Therefore, there is the fault of increase and decrease in those treatises. However, if combined with the Mahayana treatises, there is no fault of increase and decrease. Alternatively, the Hinayana treatises employ the first extreme. The second is that the meaning explained by Master Xuanzang based on the Hinayana treatises is the same as previously explained. Based on the Mahayana treatises, there are two extremes: the first is that there is no beginning but there is an end, such as the two types of those with definite lineage. The second is that there is no beginning and no end, such as sentient beings without lineage, others with definite lineage, and bodhisattvas with definite lineage. The statement in the Sutra Pitaka that there is no increase or decrease refers to the nature of the thing itself, and there is no fault in teaching it. If combined with the Shastra Yogacarabhumi and its commentary, then it can be established that sentient beings with and without lineage are distinguished by five faults, as in those texts. If, like the Tathagatagarbha Sutra, the distinction of sentient beings without lineage is established by five faults, then how should it be communicated and explained? Master Xuanzang said this: Because the three forms of those without lineage shown in the Tathagatagarbha Sutra mostly do not accord with the treatises, they cannot be taken as reliable. The extensive differentiation is as it appears in the teaching of the five lineages. Therefore, the teaching of this Sutra, "For what reason was it spoken?" is also spoken for the sake of the bodhisattvas and those with indefinite lineage among the five lineages. Therefore, the Sutra says below: The consciousness of grasping is very deep and subtle, all seeds.
