From what intention was it spoken? As is the absence of inherent existence, so is the absence of arising. As is the absence of arising, so is the absence of cessation. As is the absence of arising and the absence of cessation, so is the quiescence from the beginning. As is the quiescence from the beginning, so is the complete nirvana by nature. Furthermore, the intention from that itself is as follows: From the three aspects of inherent existence, what is the agent of all dharmas, which is taught as the absence of inherent existence, the absence of arising, the absence of cessation, and so forth. It is stated that even in one kind of differing commentary on the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, it is taught in that way. Even though the teachings have become so different, this so-called 'agent itself' is the nature of the completely imputed, therefore, in the extremely extensive treatises such as the Hundred Treatises, relying on the nature of the completely imputed, the teaching that all dharmas are without inherent existence, without arising, without cessation, and so forth, is not the ultimate truth of dependent origination, but is taught extensively. Therefore, this sutra also, in general, intends the three absences of inherent existence, and thus teaches that all dharmas are without inherent existence. Intending the first and last absences of inherent existence, it teaches the absence of arising and so forth. The nature of other-powered is arising in dependence on others, but arising by itself and arising without a cause are meaningless, therefore, treatises such as the Compendium of Abhidharma, starting from the three aspects of inherent existence, teach that all dharmas are without inherent existence, without arising, without cessation, and so forth. The detailed meaning of the three absences of inherent existence should be understood as it appears in those with steadfast characteristics. Therefore, I, intending the ultimate truth of the absence of inherent existence, which is well distinguished by the selflessness of phenomena, thus taught that all phenomena are without arising, without cessation, quiescent from the beginning, and completely nirvanic by nature. This is the fourth conclusion, merely words. The intentions stated above are expedient intentions.

If asked, from where are these four ways understood? The answer is, if combined with the treatise 'Abhidharmasamuccaya,' there are four kinds of indirect intentions. Therefore, from that very treatise, there is indirect intention in introduction, indirect intention in characteristics, indirect intention in antidote, and indirect intention in transformation. These four ways summarize all the reasons for indirect speech by the Tathagata in the Mahayana. Among them, the indirect intention in introduction is like this: In the Hearer Vehicle, it is said that phenomena such as form have their own nature, in order to introduce the scriptures of the noble ones without fear. The indirect intention in characteristics is like this: Understanding from the three natures, it is taught that all phenomena are without self-nature, without arising, without ceasing, and so on. The indirect intention in antidote is like this: In order to subdue the faults of offenses, the Tathagata, with various indirect intentions, correctly proclaimed the supreme vehicle for the sake of the antidote to the eight obscurations. What are these eight? Namely: disparaging the Buddha, disparaging the Dharma, laziness, being content with only small virtues, engaging in desire, engaging in pride, regret, and uncertain lineage. As an antidote to disparaging the Buddha, (the Buddha said) the former Buddha Vipashyin was also me. As an antidote to disparaging the Dharma, (the Buddha said) if one serves and honors as many Tathagatas as there are sands in the Ganges River, the wisdom of the Mahayana will arise. As an antidote to the obscuration of laziness, (the Buddha said) all sentient beings who aspire to be born in Sukhavati will be born there. Merely remembering and reciting the name of the stainless Buddha Moonlight Tathagata will surely attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. As an antidote to being content with only small virtues, sometimes praising actions such as generosity, and sometimes belittling them. As an antidote to cutting off engaging in desire,
