Firstly, like this, the way of the ultimate truth of the selflessness of phenomena is that, because the nature of phenomena exists in various ways in the time of permanence and the time of steadfastness, it is manifestly established as the unconditioned. Because it is unconditioned, the two meanings of no birth and no cessation are manifestly accomplished, which is the general summary. Because it is not associated with all defilements, it is peaceful from the beginning, and its nature is completely extinguished. This is the second point, explaining that from the cause of not being associated with all defilements, peace from the beginning, and the two meanings of the nature being completely extinguished are manifestly accomplished. If the sutras and other scriptures speak of "unborn" and so on, then why is it that here it is only from the beginning and the end of emptiness of essence that it is elaborated? It is said: Emptiness of essence also has two ways of speaking, namely, the emptiness of essence that is commonly taught from the two collections of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles, and the emptiness of essence that is taught only from the collection of Bodhisattvas. Among them, what is called commonly taught is as it is in the commentary on the Summary of the Great Vehicle composed by the teacher Vasubandhu: "Here, the intention of teaching that all phenomena are without essence should be explained, that is, the absence of self-origination, that is, none of the phenomena exist as their own essence apart from many causes and conditions, which is called one intention of teaching no essence. The absence of self-nature, that is, the absence of essence of any phenomenon that does not arise again after it has ceased, is also called one intention of teaching no essence. The absence of self-essence, that is, the absence of essence of any phenomenon that, as soon as it arises, has no power to remain for even a single moment, those reasons for the absence of essence of phenomena are not common to the Hearers." It is like this explanation. Among them, the uncommon one is also as it is in the same commentary: "As it appears, it exists, because it is not so, therefore it is said to be without essence, that emptiness of essence is profound, which is not common to the Hearers."

If it is said that each individual clings to the nature of what is thoroughly imputed, then it is not so, because of that intention. In conjunction with the reasoning of the Great Vehicle, it is shown that all phenomena are without self-nature. This is the concluding statement of such a teaching. The treatise *Abhidharma-samuccaya* and the *Nihsvabhavata-nirdesa* also teach the same. Although there are these two ways of teaching, this sutra speaks of such things as non-self-nature by making it the domain of the uncommon gate. The teaching of non-self-nature and so on through the uncommon gate is also different from each other in the teachings that show non-self-nature, so some of the noble scriptures start from the first non-self-nature and show that all phenomena are non-self-nature, unborn, unceasing, and so on. As it says in the treatise *Sata-sastra*: "The Blessed One himself, thinking of the nature of what I have thoroughly imputed, shows in other sutras that all phenomena are without self-nature, unborn, unceasing, primordially peaceful, and naturally completely liberated." Furthermore, the treatises *Yogacarabhumi*, *Sutralamkara*, the teacher Vasubandhu, and the *Mahayanasamgraha-bhasya* by Nihsvabhava also agree with this. One different view of the treatise *Mahayanasamgraha-bhasya* is that it generally relies on the three kinds of non-self-nature to show non-self-nature and so on, which is different from this. Some scriptures start from the three kinds of non-self-nature and show that all phenomena are non-self-nature, while starting from the first non-self-nature, they show that it is unborn and so on. As it says in the treatise *Yogacarabhumi*: "From what intention did the Blessed One say that all phenomena are without self-nature?" He said, "Because of taming, he spoke from the three kinds of non-self-nature in this and that." Furthermore, in that same text, the Blessed One
