Unborn to be born, the born to abide, not to be abandoned and to grow again, to increase and expand, as previously stated. As with the mindfulnesses, so too with the right abandonments, the miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, and the limbs of enlightenment, it is said in the same way, this is the second, showing the other five doors by category. Just as there are five sentences for mindfulness, so too the four right abandonments, the four miraculous feet, the five faculties, the five powers, and the seven limbs of enlightenment should also be understood to have five sentences as before, this is the concluding statement. In various ways, the nature of the noble eightfold path, the antidote, the unfavorable aspects, the cultivation, the unborn to be born, the born to abide, not to be abandoned and to grow again, to increase and expand, is also said in the same way, this is the fifth, showing the noble eightfold path, it should be understood to have five sentences as before. These last seven doors are showing the yoga of cultivating the thirty-seven limbs of enlightenment, the meaning of these is as it appears from the teachings on the nature and so on. The Blessed One also said that all phenomena are without essence, without birth, without cessation, peaceful from the beginning, naturally in complete nirvana, this is the statement of the teaching of non-essence. This is based on what is said in the sutra below, that the wheel of Dharma was turned in the three times, in the first time it was said that the four truths were shown, in the second time the teaching of no characteristics was spoken, in the third time the definitive meaning was spoken, thus it is said that all phenomena are without essence, without birth, without cessation, peaceful from the beginning, naturally in complete nirvana, therefore it is without essence. Here, the second and third times are asking in relation to the first time, previously it was said that there is essence, and later it was said that there is no essence, and it is combined with that.

Thus, the statement of no self-nature is because it contradicts what was previously said to have self-nature, which is the argument raised by questioning with no self-nature. Combining with this sutra, it is said to exist previously, but later it is shown to be non-existent. In the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, it shows both emptiness and existence in both earlier and later times. Therefore, in that very sutra, it says: 'Good son, I arose from the presence of the Tree King and went to the Deer Park in the country of Varanasi, and when I turned the wheel of the Dharma of the Four Noble Truths for the five individuals, including Ajnata Kaundinya, I also said that all dharmas are originally peaceful.' In between, from this and other sutras, for the sake of the monks and many Bodhisattvas, the twelve links of dependent origination and the six perfections are explained and elaborated, and it is also said that all dharmas are originally empty and peaceful. Thus it is said, and the details are as shown in that very sutra. How should these two sutras be explained as mentioned above? Answer: As it is said in the commentary on the Holy Perfection of Wisdom: 'The Buddhas have two ways of teaching the Dharma, namely, the extremely secret and the manifestly revealed.' The Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings is the door of the extremely secret, while this sutra is the door of the manifestly revealed, each speaking of only one aspect, therefore there is no contradiction between them. 'With what intention did the Blessed One say that all dharmas are without self-nature, without birth, without cessation, originally peaceful, and naturally in nirvana?' etc., this is the third, showing the request for questioning as it is. This also has three aspects: asking about one's own doubts, requesting to be explained, and stating the sutra itself that is requested to be explained. This is the first: Thus, the Blessed One previously said that the thirteen Dharma gates of aggregates, sense bases, and elements, etc., have self-nature, but later again said that all dharmas are without self-nature, without birth, without cessation.

Because the sutras say "having own-being" etc., and later say "without own-being," these two teachings contradict each other. Therefore, if one does not understand from what intention the Bhagavan said "without own-being" etc., that is the meaning. In the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, five terms appear: all dharmas are without own-being from the beginning, all dharmas are unborn from the beginning, all dharmas are unceasing from the beginning, all dharmas are peaceful from the beginning, and all dharmas are naturally completely liberated from suffering from the beginning. I am asking the Tathagata about this meaning today. May the Tathagata consider with compassion, this is the second, requesting to explain. Please explain what is the intention of all dharmas being without own-being, unborn, unceasing, peaceful from the beginning, and naturally completely liberated from suffering, this is the third, which is the sutra itself that is requested to be explained. Then, the Bhagavan said to the Bodhisattva Real Noble Mañjuśrī, from here onwards, is the second part, which shows the aspect of the Tathagata's true explanation. This is also divided into two: praising the request and showing permission to explain, and from "Real Noble Mañjuśrī, it should be understood in this way" onwards, answering truthfully as requested. The first part is again divided into two: praising the request as having benefits, and urging to listen and permitting to explain. Praising the request as having benefits is again divided into four: distinguishing the speaker, praising the request as being in accordance with reason, stating the praise of asking profound meanings, and praising the benefits of the request, this is the first. "Real Noble Mañjuśrī, your mind's thought is virtuous, arising properly, excellent, excellent," this is the second, praising the request as being in accordance with reason. "Son of good family, you are asking the Tathagata about profound meanings today, excellent, excellent," this is the third, stating the praise of asking profound meanings.
