Is it the characteristic of own-being? Or is it the shape of the characteristic? Those three without own-being are also, in order, the characteristics of the nature of the three own-beings. This chapter extensively shows the characteristics of the nature of the three without own-being, therefore it is called the chapter of the characteristic of the absence of own-being. In the Sutra Unraveling the Profound Meaning, "The chapter asked by the Bodhisattva Truly Established" is so named because it is named after a person. This is because the translators have different ideas. From "Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Truly Established Excellent Virtue said to the Bhagavan," this shows the explanation of the meaning of the words of the sutra. After showing the objects of own-being and non-own-being, before that, the objects of the three own-beings have been explained. From this point on, the second three non-own-beings are shown. This chapter has five aspects. The first is the aspect of the Bodhisattva asking the question. The second, from "Then, the Bhagavan," is the aspect of the Tathagata's true explanation. The third, from "Then, the Bodhisattva Truly Established Excellent Virtue," is the aspect of understanding and truly receiving the teachings. The fourth, from "Then, the Bodhisattva Truly Established Excellent Virtue," is the aspect of praising and creating special qualities. The fifth, from "Then, the Bodhisattva Truly Established Excellent Virtue," is the aspect of practicing according to the teachings. The aspect of asking can also be divided into three: asking and stating the answerer, from "I formerly," is the showing of the object of the question itself, and from "From what intention did the Bhagavan," is the asking as it was said. This is the first asking and stating the answerer. "Truly Established" refers to the object to be attained, because it is the object of supreme wisdom, it is called Truly Established. "Excellent Virtue" refers to the wisdom that attains it, because it arises from focusing on the Truly Established, it is Excellent Virtue.

It is called "Arya." In the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, it is said, "Because of understanding and comprehending this, it is called a true Arya." Because sublime wisdom arises from this object of focus, it is designated as "true Arya" from the perspective of what is realized and what is to be realized. When I was alone in a solitary place, such thoughts arose in my mind, and so on, which shows the very object of what is to be asked about as the second thing. This also has two aspects: one is showing the thought of doubt that arose in oneself, and the other is stating the very statement of what is to be asked. This is the first: like when I was alone, dwelling in a solitary place in the mountains and forests, such a thought arose: why did the Bhagavan first say that self-nature exists, and later say that self-nature does not exist? This is the summary of the question. In the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, it says, "In a solitary place, a mind of thought arises." It should be distinguished as before, because the translators have different ideas. If that thought is explained, there are four aspects: the first is whatever thought is associated with the mind and mental factors that are contaminated with the outflows of the three realms. The second is thought itself. Therefore, in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, it says, "In a solitary place, a mind of thought arises." The third is only thought. Therefore, in the Abhidharmasamuccaya, it is said, "Engaging in thought means inhaling and exhaling, and focusing on the arising as the object of mindfulness." The Abhidharmakośa also says, "Thought mostly distracts the mind, therefore it is called engaging in thought." This shows that either one correctly enters meditation by relying on mindfulness of breathing, or generally thinking and analyzing are called engaging in thought. The fourth is how to completely seek the number of wisdom, because some say it that way. Here, tranquility is the best. The Bhagavan spoke in many ways about the self-nature of the aggregates, the nature of arising, and...

And the characteristics of destruction, abandonment and complete knowledge are also taught, etc., which shows that the second teaching of inquiry is mentioned. This also has two aspects: the teaching that speaks of the existence of essence, and the teaching that the Blessed One speaks of the non-existence of essence by saying "other than that." The former has thirteen doors, which are also summarized into five aspects and taught: the teaching of aggregates, etc., the teaching of solitude, the teaching of elements, the teaching of mindfulness, etc., and the teaching of the eightfold noble path. This is the first door of the teaching of aggregates. This also has two aspects: the teaching of aggregates, and the teaching of three similarities. This is the first distinction of the teaching of aggregates by the five characteristics. There are two explanations for the term "many kinds." Some say that it is called "many" because there are not only one kind of names such as self-characteristics and common characteristics that exist in the aggregates. Others say that it is called "many" because there are not only one kind of names such as what can be taught, what cannot be taught, what has form, and what has no form. Among them, the self-characteristic is the characteristic of distinction, as it is said that form is obstructive, and so on, until consciousness is discriminating. The characteristic of arising and the characteristic of destruction are common characteristics, because form and so on have the characteristic of arising and destruction. Abandonment and complete knowledge are the characteristics of suffering and origin, because karma and afflictions of the truth of origin should be abandoned, and the fruit of the truth of suffering, the cycle of existence, should be completely known. Alternatively, the self-characteristic refers to the characteristic of self-nature and distinction, and the arising and destruction of these two characteristics pervade everything. Abandonment and complete knowledge will be understood below, and should be understood as shown from the occasion.
