It is said that this is for complete holding. Some say that because the self-nature of the dependent is non-existent, the thusness that is completely distinguished, because it is separated from all characteristics, is called without characteristics. Therefore, in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle Sutra, it is said: Thusness is forever separated from all characteristics such as form, so it is called without characteristics. Furthermore, in the Treatise of the Hundred, which is extremely extensive, it is said: The meaning of the emptiness of thusness is that because it is separated from the characteristics of all dharmas such as existence and non-existence, it is called without characteristics. If combined with this explanation, then it is like this, because one can completely understand the dharma without characteristics, it shows that one must completely abandon the self-nature of the dependent, which is the dharma of the characteristics of the completely afflicted. Some say that holding onto the perfectly established nature is all called without characteristics, this is because of the two meanings of the former. If combined with this explanation, then it is like this, because one recognizes the dharma without characteristics of the completely imputed, the self-nature of the perfectly established includes the dharma without characteristics, and one will enter into it. Because one can include and enter into the self-nature of the perfectly established, it shows that one must completely abandon the self-nature of the dependent, which is the dharma of the characteristics of the completely afflicted. Therefore, in the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, it is said: When a yogi correctly enters the self-nature of the completely imputed, which self-nature does he follow? He replies: He follows the self-nature of the perfectly established. When a yogi follows the self-nature of the perfectly established, which self-nature does he destroy? He replies: He destroys the self-nature of the dependent. If one abandons the dharma of the characteristics of the completely afflicted, one can obtain the dharma of the characteristics of purity, which refers to the fact that because one abandons the completely afflicted, it shows that one can obtain the pure Nirvana. Just like this, because one abandons the dharma of the completely afflicted, one can obtain the pure Nirvana. Three natures

So, on what stage is this maternal yoga explained? If it is said to be based on the front of the ground, then how can the nature of the pervasively afflicted dharma be abandoned? Because it is first abandoned through the action of no-self. If it is said to be based on dwelling on the ground, then when entering the first ground, the two aspects of emptiness manifest, how can the yoga of the two natures be generated beforehand? It is said that this yoga of the three natures can also be divided into two stages. The yoga of the first two natures is based on the stage of giving, contemplating the fourfold complete search and the fourfold complete knowledge as it is. The third, the completely established nature, is the tenth ground. Because there is a stage, the master Asanga, in his treatise 'Compendium of the Great Vehicle,' established the yoga of the three natures, thereby explaining the meaning of this sutra. Therefore, in that very text, it says: 'Thus, this bodhisattva, in order to enter the nature of the meaning that appears as the expression of mind, enters the nature of the pervasively conceived. In order to enter mere consciousness, he enters the nature of dependence on others. How does one enter the nature of complete establishment? It is by entering after reversing even the perception through mere consciousness.' At that time, because there is no opportunity for all those appearances as meanings to arise, the expression of mind follows the habits of the dharma that has been heard, for the perception of meaning that has been destroyed. Thus, the appearance of mere consciousness also does not arise, because there is no cause and condition. Therefore, it is said that in all meanings, one abides in the name of non-discrimination. Among them, the so-called name of non-discrimination is the name that expresses the truth of suchness, the equality of reality. Thus, whatever is the suchness that is to be expressed is called all meanings, that is, the meaning of non-discrimination. Here, the name that expresses is named as the name of discrimination from what is to be expressed. Therefore, the suchness that is to be expressed is named from what expresses, therefore it is also the name of non-discrimination.
