eighth etc. These three natures are the characteristics of the nature of all dharmas, so they are called the characteristics of all dharmas. If combined with this explanation, among the three natures, the first two natures are explained from the perspective of "the characteristics of all dharmas", because both natures possess all dharmas. The latter, the pariniṣpanna-svabhāva (perfected nature), is explained with "the characteristics of all dharmas" as the main focus, because it is "the characteristics of all dharmas". Although there are two explanations, the latter explanation is better, because it is consistent with what is said in the sutra below and there is no contradiction. In the sutra below, it is also said that the parikalpita (imputed nature) and paratantra (dependent nature) are "all", while the pariniṣpanna-svabhāva is called "the suchness of the equality of all dharmas". This chapter extensively elucidates the reasoning of the characteristics of all dharmas, so it is called the chapter on the characteristics of all dharmas. In the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, it is called "the chapter of the questions of the noble bodhisattva Guṇakṣetra (garden of merit)", because there are such differences in the Indian Sanskrit versions. Then, the bodhisattva Guṇākara (source of merit) said to the Bhagavan (Blessed One): "Bhagavan, what do you mean by 'a bodhisattva who is skilled in the characteristics of dharmas'?" From here onwards, is the second part, which correctly explains the meaning of the sutra's words. There are two types of objects to be imputed: the objects of ultimate truth and conventional truth, and the objects of the nature of existence and non-existence. Previously, the two types of objects, ultimate truth and conventional truth, have been explained. From here onwards, the objects of the nature of existence and non-existence will be explained. First, existence is explained as nature, which is the three natures themselves. After that, non-existence is explained as nature, which is the three non-natures themselves. In these two chapters, non-existence is established based on existence.

It was created. That is also because the nature of existence is the root, so it was previously taught; the nature of non-existence is a branch, so it was taught later. Because of that reason, it is said in the "Thirty Verses" composed by the scholar Vasubandhu: "Self-nature is threefold, non-self-nature is also threefold, thinking of all those dharmas, it is said to be without self-nature." That's how it is said. This chapter is also divided into two types: the Bodhisattva's request, and the Tathagata's correct answer. The request is also divided into two types: the teaching of what is being requested itself, and the request as it is taught, this is the first type. The words of this sutra are also taught in two ways: relying on time to distinguish the form of the questioner and the answer. In the "Sandhinirmocana Sutra", it is called the Garden of Merit, just as merit makes people fully mature, just as many trees become gardens, therefore, because both the metaphor and the meaning are spoken, it is called the Garden of Merit. Here it is called the Source of Merit, because the cause of merit has been accumulated from countless kalpas, this is named from the cause, because the basis of the merits of the two accumulations of merit and wisdom is accumulated, so it is called the Source of Merit. The Bodhisattva who is skilled in the nature of all dharmas is said to be the teaching of what is being requested itself. The nature of all dharmas is said to be the dharma to be examined. The Bodhisattva who is skilled is said to be the person who examines. If one is called a Bodhisattva who is skilled in the nature of all dharmas, how much is needed to be called a Bodhisattva who is skilled in the nature of all dharmas? How much does the Tathagata need to establish them as Bodhisattvas who are skilled in the nature of all dharmas? This request is the second type of request as it is taught. The words of this sutra are also divided into two types: the teaching of what is being requested itself, and the words of the request explained by "how much", etc.
