It is called the eye of similar dependence. Similarly, up to the realm of mind, each one should extensively explain its own realm and its own karma. The Kashmir Sarvastivadins believe that the eye of similar dependence has only four aspects: forms that have ceased without being seen, or will cease, or are of the nature of non-arising. Some Western teachers explain that there are five aspects. If the nature of non-arising is divided into two, it is realized with consciousness and without consciousness. This should also be understood up to the realm of body. The so-called similar dependence is only the nature of non-arising. In the realm of form, whatever is seen or will be seen by the eye is called the form of similar dependence. The form of similar dependence has four aspects. Up to the realm of mind, it should be understood how similar dependence and its similar dependence are indicated, depending on whether each sense faculty performs its own function or not. If the eye consciousness focuses on one object, it is called similar dependence. If it focuses on all other objects, it is also called similar dependence. Its similar dependence is also the same. Similarly, up to the realm of mind, the extensive explanation should also be understood in the same way. This is also indicated in the Samyuktabhidharmahrdaya. In the Mahavibhasa, there are three explanations. The first teacher's explanation is consistent with the explanation in the Abhidharmakosa. Some say that the eye that sees forms is called the eye of similar dependence for the sentient being itself, and the eye of its similar dependence for other sentient beings. The eye that does not see forms is called the eye of its similar dependence for the sentient being itself, and the eye of its similar dependence for other sentient beings. Others say that the eye that sees forms is called the eye of similar dependence for the sentient being itself, but it is neither similar dependence nor its similar dependence for other sentient beings. The eye that does not see forms

I call the eye of sentient beings themselves as having the same basis of dependence. For other sentient beings, it is neither the eye with the same basis of dependence, nor is it the same basis of dependence. One should not say that. Just like those with eyes, it is neither the same basis of dependence, nor is it the same basis of dependence. One should say this: among the three explanations, the first explanation is in accordance with reason. As explained in detail there. Furthermore, in the treatise of the Abhidharmakośa, because the eye is not common, the same basis of dependence and its same basis of dependence are established based on one continuum. Because form is not common, the same basis of dependence and its same basis of dependence are established based on many continua. Just as with the realm of form, so it is with the realms of sound, smell, taste, and touch. If sound can be like form, then the three, smell, taste, and touch, are taken only when the sense and object meet, so they are not common. Only one is taken, not the others. The explanation like the eye and so on, if it is reasonable, should be like form. If one asks whether this is reasonable, although there is such a reason, there is also a common meaning. Why is that? The three realms of smell and so on can generate nose and other consciousnesses in one and others, but the eye and so on are not like that, so it should be explained like form. So it is said. In the Samyukta-citta-abhidharma-śāstra, it is also said like this: the eye seeing form is with a part, and not seeing form is with another's part. Thus, the eye seeing form is with a part, and not seeing form is with another's part. The difference is that if one eye is with a part, then all others are also with a part; if one is with another's part, then all others are also with another's part, which is seeing form. What is the part with seeing? It is not the other ear, nose, tongue, and body, and the sound, smell, taste, and touch are also the same.

In terms of ultimate truth, it should be explained like the eye. In terms of conventional enumeration, it should be explained like form. As it is said in the Great Treatise on Specific Explanation, the realms of sound, smell, taste, and touch are also the same, because the support is the same, and the aspects of their support being the same are different. Alternatively, some say that in order to distinguish the smell, taste, and touch that exist in one's own body, that is, smelling, tasting, and touching, they are explained in this way. The realms of smell, taste, and touch, in terms of conventional truth, should be explained like the realm of form. For example, worldly people would say, "The smell that you smell, we also smell; the taste that you taste, we also taste; the touch that you touch, we also touch." In terms of ultimate truth, the realms of smell, taste, and touch should be explained like the eye realm. For example, the realm of smell that one sentient being smells, other sentient beings cannot smell; the realm of taste that one sentient being tastes, other sentient beings cannot taste; the realm of touch that one sentient being touches, other sentient beings cannot touch. If the bodies of two sentient beings are in contact with the same touch realm from their respective directions, and become a common touch, then shouldn't this be explained like the realm of form in ultimate truth? Answer: It is not so. Because the touch realm is a collection of many minute particles, when two bodies come into contact, each obtains a part separately, and it is not obtained in common. Therefore, in terms of ultimate truth, it should be explained like the eye realm. The two realms of smell and taste should also be understood in the same way. Others think that for the smell and touch of others and non-sentient beings, smelling, tasting, and touching, whether in the past or present, in terms of conventional truth, it should be explained like the realm of form. For example, worldly people would say that it is obtained in common. Therefore, in terms of ultimate truth, it should be like the eye realm.
