It is called "Outward." As stated in the Compendium of the Mahayana, it is called "Outward" because the seeds of various kinds of dharmas are universally accumulated. Secondly, it is because the six external objects are universally accumulated and increased. The third is called "Gathering," because it gathers various objects to be focused on, as stated in the Sutra Unraveling the Profound Meaning and the Five Aggregates Treatise. If combined with this sutra, it starts from the second meaning, therefore it is said "mind." This also has two meanings: universally accumulating and increasing. Just like this, due to the influence of form and so on, the external objects are fully sought, therefore they will universally accumulate and increase. In the Treatise on Mere Representation, seven names will appear. If the four names mentioned in this sutra are added, then three are added. What are those three names? It is in that very treatise, as it is said, it is also called "The Place of What is to be Known," because it is the place of the universally defiled and universally purified dharmas. This is like what is said in the Compendium of the Mahayana, among the ten kinds of excellent scriptures that are mentioned, this is the first. It is like what is said, "The excellent speech of the excellence of the place." In the commentary composed by Master Vasubandhu, it says: Because it is to be known, it is called "What is to be Known." It is like this: the universally defiled and universally purified dharmas, namely the three natures. The so-called "place" is the meaning of cause. In the commentary by Master Asanga, it also says: Because it is to be known, it is called "What is to be Known." The place is like this: it is a stable place. From the meaning of the word, it is the defilement and the universally purified conditioned dharmas that are taken as the basis, but not the unconditioned, because abiding in it is meaningless. The place is the Alaya consciousness itself, because it is the cause of those and the guide of those, it should be understood appropriately. Among them, Master Vasubandhu considers the Alaya

Not fully knowing, that is, it shows that all three natures act as the place of everything. The teacher of No-Self-Nature is only the nature and place of Other-dependent, but not the place of the nature of Completely Imagined and Perfectly Established, as it says. Among them, the so-called "because it is their cause" refers to the place of Other-dependent belonging to the part of all afflictions. The so-called "in order to guide them" refers to the place of Other-dependent belonging to the part of complete purification. Why are these two treatises contradictory? Answer: Because the teacher Vasubandhu started from the general place, he generally explained the three natures. The No-Self-Nature theory, on the other hand, started from the near place, so it is explained only in conjunction with the nature of Other-dependent, and since each says a separate meaning, there is no contradiction. Or it can also be called the Vipaka-vijnana, because it can guide the Vipaka fruit of good and non-good deeds in Samsara. Among them, the so-called Vipaka also has three meanings: first, because it matures after transformation, it is called Vipaka. Second, because it matures at different times, it is called Vipaka. Third, because it matures in different categories, it is called Vipaka, that is, the cause is good and non-good, and the result is neutral, so it is called Vipaka. Among the three, here the third different category is taken, because the first two are general names, so Vipaka also belongs to others. Or it can also be called the Immaculate Consciousness, because it is the place of the extremely pure and undefiled Dharmas.

As it is said in the Sutra of the Array of the Qualities of the Tathagata: The stainless consciousness of the Tathagata is an utterly pure and uncontaminated realm, liberated from all obscurations, possessing wisdom like a mirror. Thus it is said. The extensive explanation should be understood as it is taught in the commentary on the treatise establishing only consciousness. Twenty-first fascicle. Because the consciousness of taking, of vast intelligence, is the basis and the establishment, the six aggregates of consciousness arise, namely eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness. Hereafter, it shows the distinctions of the simultaneous arising of the second consciousness and so on. This is shown in three ways: meaning and example, and the combination of example and meaning. The first is divided into two: showing that the taking consciousness arises together with the six aggregates of consciousness, and after 'vast intelligence, if so,' showing the quantity of the simultaneous arising of mind consciousness and the five consciousnesses. The first is to distinguish the simultaneous arising based on the root and branches, and the latter is to show the single arising based on mind consciousness. As in the Yogacarabhumi-sastra and so on, the simultaneous arising is shown starting from the first meaning. Here, the reason for not showing the simultaneous arising of the afflicted mind is that since the beginning and the end have been mentioned, it is not shown in brief. Therefore, in the Yogacarabhumi-sastra and so on, the afflicted mind is also summarized and the simultaneous arising at one time is shown. The first is also shown in two ways: briefly showing the simultaneous arising, and repeating it based on importance. This is the first brief indication, such that because the taking consciousness is the basis, the six aggregates of consciousness, such as eye consciousness, gradually increase. Among them, the eye with consciousness and the form are the conditions, and eye consciousness arises.
