Of these, five are grasping. Five are grasping and non-grasping. The others are entirely non-grasping. It is said that, relying on these teachings, grasping is shown as taking something as one's own nature. Some show grasping based on two meanings, as it is said in the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*: 'What is the form that is grasped by the abiding and non-abiding consciousness? It is that which is mixed and combined with consciousness, enters into the meaning of the same pleasure, and that which arises as a feeling based on this. The opposite of this should be known as not grasped.' Also, as it says there: 'The grasped dharmas are as follows: the forms and the mind and mental factors are grasped, and based on them, the mind and mental factors enter and combine, becoming the same pleasurable object. Among them, combination and the same pleasure are because the mind and mental factors grasp them, causing those forms to not continue, decay, and not be subdued. Therefore, for the grasped forms, sometimes they cause harm, and sometimes they are beneficial. Those minds and mental factors also become beneficial or harmful following them. The opposite of this is called non-grasped.' Like this and so on. The sutra says 'grasping' has two meanings: the ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness) holds the sense-base as its own place, and the nature of holding the seeds. The details are as explained in the treatises. Among them, the form realm has both kinds of grasping, while the formless realm does not have both kinds, which is the third kind of distinction based on the realm. If this sutra text is combined with the tenets of the Mahāyāna, then the formless realm does not have the ten form realms such as eyes and ears, unlike the Mahāsāṃghika school which believes that it has ten forms and the five aggregates. This is not correct. As it says in the *Karmavibhaṅga Sūtra*:

It is also said that the gods of the formless realm came together in assembly. Also, because it is said in the Holy Dharma White Lotus Sutra, "Smelling the scent of the peak of existence." All these words are included in the realm of Dharma. The vast wisdom consciousness is also called the grasping consciousness. Why is that? Because this consciousness follows the body and completely grasps it. This is the second, the explanation of the grasping consciousness. Thus, by the power of this consciousness, it follows the body, and because it takes the material faculties without causing them to perish, this consciousness is called grasping. In the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, grasping is explained in two ways: because it holds the material faculties without destroying them, and because it grasps its own nature and takes birth. As explained extensively in that very text. In the Vijñāptimātratāsiddhiśāstra, it is explained in three ways. Therefore, in that very text it says, "Because it holds the seeds of all dharmas, holds the place of the material faculties, and holds the connection of continuity, this consciousness is called grasping." This is the very grasping explained in two treatises. It is also called the Ālayavijñāna. Why is that? Because consciousness gathers, takes, and hides the body, and because it accomplishes the same meaning of bliss. This is the third, the explanation of the Ālayavijñāna. Ālaya has three meanings: the hider, the hidden, and the holder of the hidden. Therefore, in the Vijñāptimātratāsiddhiśāstra it says, "This consciousness has the meaning of hiding, being hidden, and holding the hidden, and because of all afflictions and mutual causes, and because beings cling to an inner self."

If asked, what is the Ālaya-vijñāna? Answer: Because it can conceal all the dharmas of the arising afflictions here as the object of the fruit; and also because these consciousnesses can be combined with the object of the cause; or because sentient beings combine this consciousness with their own self, it is called Ālaya-vijñāna. There are three different meanings of concealment. The first is the ability to conceal, that is, the fruit is concealed in the cause, because the seeds existing in the consciousness can generate the seven manifest consciousnesses, because it is not separate from the cause of generating the fruit of all afflictions. The second is being concealed, that is, the causal seeds are concealed in the fruit, because the completely matured seeds are concealed in the gate of the manifest consciousness, because it is manifestly established in the nature of the cause. The third is the meaning of concealing by clinging to self, that is, the object is completely clung to and concealed. This sutra is inconsistent with the treatises, because this consciousness gathers the bodies with the senses in one place, so it is those concealments, as well as becoming the dependent body, and the unity of bliss. This is because the manifest consciousness is concealed from this dependent, so it is called concealment. This is also one aspect of the meaning in concealment, therefore, in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra it is said, because of the manifest clinging from these bodies, and because the self becomes one. Among them, manifest clinging is called gathering and concealing, and the self becoming one is called the meaning of establishment and the unity of bliss. It is also called mind, why? Because relying on the power of this consciousness, form, sound, smell, taste, touch, etc. can all be accumulated and increased. This fourth is the detailed explanation of the meaning of mind. This also has many meanings. The first is that accumulation is creation, because it accumulates the seeds of all dharmas, thereby causing the dharmas to arise. As stated in the Vijñāptimātratāsiddhi Śāstra. Second, accumulation has two meanings, that is, the seeds of all dharmas are completely accumulated.
