The field will become very vast. The water element will gather it. The fire element will ripen it, showing a state of not dripping. The wind element will separate the limbs and make them abide, as it is said in the sutra. The separate establishment of those states also becomes two states, namely the eight periods of dwelling in the womb and the eight periods of general characteristics. Among them, the eight periods of dwelling in the womb are like this, namely the curdling period and so on. Therefore, in the treatise *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, it says: After that, the faculties will gradually arise, as it is said in dependent origination: Initially it becomes curdled, after that it becomes porridge-like, after the porridge-like it becomes yogurt-like, after the yogurt-like it becomes spherical, after the spherical the limbs arise, hair, body hair, nails, etc. arise, the colored faculties and the marks gradually arise. It is said like that in the sutra. Furthermore, in the treatise *Yogācārabhūmi*, there are also eight periods for dwelling in the womb. What are the eight periods? Namely, the curdling period, the porridge-like period, the yogurt-like period, the hardening period, the period of limb movement, the period of hair and body hair and nail growth, the period of faculty manifestation, and the period of mark manifestation. Among them, covered like butter, with internal moisture and congealed, is called the curdling period. Both inside and outside becoming like butter, congealed like yogurt but not yet solidified, is called the porridge-like period. Already solidified but thin, is called the yogurt-like period. Becoming thick, able to withstand touch, is called the hardening period. From that it becomes like a piece of flesh, the names of limbs and branches appear, is called the limb movement period. At that time, hair, body hair, and nails grow, that is that period. From then on, the faculties such as the eyes manifestly accomplish, is called the period of faculty manifestation. From then on, its position becomes clear, is called the period of mark manifestation. It is said like that in the sutra. So, how long does it take for those periods of curdling and so on to be completed?

It is said: From the "Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice," being in the womb, in thirty-eight weeks, one becomes fully endowed with limbs and all organs in the womb. After that, after four weeks, one will be born. As the Blessed One said in the "Entering the Womb Sutra": That is nine months, or beyond that, it becomes extremely complete. Eight months is complete, but not extremely complete. Six or seven months will not be complete, and may even be incomplete in limbs, as it is said. To extensively distinguish, one should understand as taught in the "Treatise on the Path of Liberation" and the "Entering the Womb Sutra." Among these, the eight periods of general characteristics, as stated in the "Yoga Practice Ground Treatise": What are the eight periods? They are: the period of being in the womb, the period of being born, the period of being a child, the period of being a youth, the period of being young, the period of being mature, the period of being old, and the period of being decrepit. Among these, the period of being in the womb is like: curds and so on. The period of being born is like: that above is the period below cessation. The period of being a child is like: walking and being unable to play below. The period of being a youth is like: being able to do that. The period of being young is like:

The so-called "depending on taking the habits of abandonment" means arranging the names in numerical order. For example, in the state of taking birth, the Vipāka-vijñāna takes in two ways, namely, taking the object as the target. The first is taking the five sense faculties and the forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects that are based on them; the second is taking the habits of the three dharmas of characteristics, names, and discriminations as the target. But it does not include the seeds without outflows, because it is not the target. These takings are also the target, therefore, it is summarized in the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra that the Ālaya-vijñāna enters with two kinds of targets: in order to cognize the inner taking, and in order to cognize the nature of the complete image of the outer container world. Among them, the cognition of the inner taking is like this: the habits of manifest attachment to the nature of the completely imputed, and the forms of the base and the sense faculties. These are also in the form realm. The formless realm is only the taking of habits. Among them, the nature of the complete image of the outer container world is like this: in order to cognize the target of the base, and the Ālaya-vijñāna in order to cognize the inner taking. At all times, the continuous non-cessation is the nature of the container world. For example, when a lamp is burning, the cause of the wick and the oil is the inner entering, and the outer is the production of light. Similarly, the way in which the Ālaya-vijñāna arises by targeting the inner taking and by targeting the nature of the outer container world should also be viewed in the same way. Furthermore, in the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi-śāstra, it says that the targets of the Ālaya-vijñāna are of three kinds: the container world, the seeds with outflows, and the body with the sense faculties. Due to the power of the causes and conditions of the Ālaya-vijñāna, when its own nature arises, the inner transformation appears as the body with the seeds and the sense faculties, while the outer transformation is suitable as a container.
