Because there are superior, middling, and inferior, the three happy realms are gods, humans, and asuras. Because non-virtue also has superior, middling, and inferior, sentient beings have the three lower realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals. Thus it is said, extensively as explained in that very text. Furthermore, in that very text, the Bhagavan did not explicitly state that there are only five realms; saying that there are five realms is like the Sarvastivadins stating that there are five realms. Furthermore, it is reasonable that there are six realms. Why is that? Because the three lower realms are places where evil is done. Whoever does much good and little evil is called an asura, a different kind of birth. Therefore, it should be said that there are six realms. Thus it is said. Question: Which realm does Yama belong to? Answer: The treatise *Mahavibhasa* says that it is included in the realm of hungry ghosts. Therefore, in the treatise *Prajnapana*, it says: Just as the king of the world of hungry ghosts is now called Yama. Thus it is said. Furthermore, it says there: Five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa is the realm of Yama, which is the root of the abode of all hungry ghosts, and there are also those who are separated from it and live elsewhere. The treatise *Yogacarabhumi* says that it is included in the realm of hell beings. Therefore, it says there that any sentient being who, through afflicted karma, becomes the master, will be born as the King Yama among the hell beings. Thus it is said. Among these, egg-born, womb-born, moisture-born, and spontaneously born are the four types of birth. The treatise *Yogacarabhumi* says: What is the birthplace of egg-born beings? For example, those sentient beings that emerge by breaking through the shell of an egg. Which are they? For example, geese, cranes, peacocks, parrots, partridges, and so on. What is the birthplace of womb-born beings? For example, sentient beings that are covered with a membrane of flesh and emerge by breaking through the membrane of flesh.

That is to say, what are those? Like this: elephants, horses, cows, donkeys, and so on. What is the birth from warmth and moisture? It is the beings that are born depending on any warmth and moisture. What are those? Like this: worms, ants, butterflies, woodworms, and so on. What is spontaneous birth? It is the beings that are born with all six senses complete or incomplete due to the power of karma. What are those? Like this: hell beings, gods, animals, hungry ghosts, and some humans. As it is said in the sutra, the detailed explanation should be understood as it is explained in the Teachings of the Law, the Abhidharmakosha, the Nyaya, and the Great Vibhasha. Since the six realms have already been explained, why are the four types of birth explained again? It is said: In the Abhidharmakosha, it is said in the Treatise of Establishment: The four types of birth include the five realms, but the five realms do not include the four types of birth. Which ones are not included? Like this: the intermediate state beings. Therefore, since the six realms (such as gods) do not include the four types of birth such as egg-born, the four types of birth such as egg-born are correctly explained. If that is the case, why are the six realms explained again? It is said: In order to clearly show the difference between the fruits of good and evil, the six realms are explained. If that is the case, why are the realms not explained? It is said: Because the realms also include non-beings, they are not explained here. The notes of the teacher's true awakening also explain in a way that is consistent with this meaning: The meaning of the six realms and the four types of birth should be understood as it is explained in other treatises that explain the characteristics. There are also two ways to explain this passage of scripture. Some people say: From this cycle of the six realms, which beings, etc., refer to the beings who have abandoned their bodies. Belonging to this or that category of beings refers to accepting the body.

It is able to distinguish. Regarding taking a body, there are also two Twentieth fascicle. Among them, from "Initially, only the mind of all seeds and, consciousness maturing and mutually gathering, increasing and expanding" to "becoming vast," this passage is the second part, starting from seed consciousness, extensively distinguishing the differences in taking birth. This also has two aspects: indicating the stages of taking birth, and explaining the reliance on the acceptance and rejection of seed consciousness. This is the first part, which is also indicated in three aspects. For example, indicating the maturation of seed consciousness, indicating mutual gathering, indicating increasing and expanding, and indicating becoming vast. Among them, "Initially, only the mind of all seeds and, consciousness maturing" indicates the maturation of seed consciousness, that is, when taking birth in those realms, initially at the moment of connection at birth, the mind of all seeds of consciousness will mature. At the initial connection, a vague state manifestly arises from the maturation of seed consciousness, which is called connection. Therefore, the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra* says: "Regarding this, the two parents become attached to each other."
