It is said that this is how it is done. Thirdly, the all-ground of universal affliction is that, with the realm of suchness as its object, four types of pride arise. That is, it grasps at the Dharma, but not at the person, as it is taught according to the treatise of the teacher Blo brten. The ninth is the stainless consciousness, which is the nature of suchness. Since the nature of suchness, which is one, possesses two meanings, the first is the object to be observed, such as suchness and the ultimate limit of reality. The second is the meaning of the observer, which is also called stainless consciousness, and is also called primordial awareness. The detailed explanation of the nine consciousnesses is as it appears in the chapter on the explanation of the nine consciousnesses from within the treatise 'The Treasury of Definitive Discernment'. Thirdly, the teacher Xuanzang, based on the Sutra of Entering Lanka and the treatises of the teacher Dharmapala, only establishes eight consciousnesses. He does not teach nine, in order to refute the treatise of Bhāviveka. It is said that the establishment of valid cognition itself has the fault of contradicting its own words. This is because in all the sutras such as the Sutra of Entering Lanka, it is said that the eighth is the all-ground consciousness. If that is the case, why is it said in the Great Chapter of the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra and others that there are only six consciousnesses? The teacher Dharmapala, in the treatise 'Establishment of Consciousness Only', explains that in the sutras,

Therefore, in order to explain the meaning of the Sutra of the Great Chapter of the Perfection of Wisdom, etc., there is no contradiction in doing so. However, the teacher True Virtue's assertion that there are nine consciousnesses, the three pitakas of the intermediate and Mount Sumeru have many faults. Among them, regarding the explanation of the seventh consciousness, there are two faults. First, what is called "taker" is actually a name for the eighth consciousness, not the seventh. Therefore, in these sutras it is said, "The eighth consciousness is called the taking consciousness." Second, there is a contradiction in meaning, because saying that it "has afflictive obscurations" contradicts the sutra itself, because the sutra points out that there is a defiled mind up to the eighth ground. The assertion that it cannot become a Buddha also contradicts treatises such as the Ornament of the Sutras, because it says, "When the eight consciousnesses are transformed, the four wisdoms are manifestly accomplished." Therefore, the assertion that the alaya consciousness gives rise to the holding of dharmas and is focused on the eighteen realms is also unreasonable. Furthermore, the new translation of the Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes says: "Consciousness appears like objects and sentient beings, self and various perceptions. This object is definitely not existent, and since there is no object, there is no consciousness." Here it says, in its commentary, that what appears like meaning refers to anything that appears as the reality of objects such as form. What appears like sentient beings refers to anything that appears as the object of self and others, as the nature of the five senses. What appears like self refers to the defiled mind, because of ignorance of self, etc., and constant similar accompaniment. What appears like various perceptions refers to the other six consciousnesses, because their characteristic is coarse various perceptions. A detailed explanation has already been given there. Therefore, the eighth consciousness should be understood as not being focused on thought, etc. A detailed distinction is as explained in the Treatise on the Establishment of Consciousness Only. Furthermore, the teacher True Virtue considers the immaculate...

It is also said that consciousness is focused on the self. However, this statement has neither a reliable source of scripture nor a convincing logical argument. Furthermore, it would also contradict the Ornament of the Qualities of the Tathagata, which states: "The stainless consciousness of the Tathagata is an extremely pure and undefiled realm, liberated from all obscurations, and possesses wisdom like a mirror." It should be understood that this is as stated in the sutras. Among them, the so-called "stainless consciousness" refers to the Alaya consciousness in the aspect of complete purification. Furthermore, this treatise called the Treatise on the Treasury of Determinations is a Yogacara text. It is said in that treatise that there is no chapter called the Chapter on the Nine Consciousnesses. Among them, the explanation of the meaning of the term is twofold: general and specific. The so-called "eight consciousnesses" is a general term, and "eight" is a numerical designation. Consciousness is the act of distinguishing. In terms of the general essence and characteristics, it is different from the six consciousnesses. Among the six types of explanations, this is the explanation with a number. Among them, the individual names are the six consciousnesses, such as the eye consciousness, and all of them are explained under the control of the master. For example, the consciousness that depends on the eye is called eye consciousness. Similarly, the consciousness that depends on the mind is called mind consciousness. The seventh is the afflicted mind, which is said in the Treatise on the Establishment of Consciousness Only, that because it always thinks definitively, it is different from other consciousnesses. Combining this explanation, because the mind itself is consciousness, it is called mind consciousness. This is the explanation of the complete holding of karma. The eighth is the Alaya consciousness, because it has the meaning of concealing, storing, and holding what is concealed, so in order, the result is hidden from the cause, the cause is hidden in the result, and the object is hidden in the holder. It is explained in detail
