Because it is not included, it is said to be like a flower in the sky. Therefore, it should be understood that those treatises only establish the six consciousnesses. Secondly, the treatises of the noble Maitreya rely on the noble Sutra of Golden Light, etc., to fully establish the eight consciousnesses. Based on this treatise, the Indian teachers have three explanations. The first is that the teacher Bodhaleuji relies on the Treatise on the Establishment of Mere Consciousness to establish two kinds of minds. The first is the mind of Dharma-nature, which is the nature of Suchness. Although the nature of Suchness is called mind, it is not an object. The second is the corresponding mind, which is said to correspond to the mental events arising from faith, desire, etc. That is to say, because it is the nature of the mind of mere consciousness, and because it is the nature of mere consciousness, there is no contradiction in calling it mind and consciousness. This is a summary statement. The second is that the teacher Yangdag Dewa relies on the treatise called "Distinguishing the Meaning Treasury" to establish the meaning of the nine consciousnesses, as stated in the chapter on the nine consciousnesses. Among them, the nine consciousnesses, the six consciousnesses of eye, etc., are the same as those stated in most other treatises. The seventh is the grasping consciousness, and the eighth grasps the self and what belongs to the self, and only has the obscuration of afflictions, without the clinging to Dharma, so it cannot definitely achieve Buddhahood. The eighth is the Alaya consciousness, which also has three aspects. Some say that the first, the nature Alaya, has the meaning of achieving Buddhahood. The second, the Vipaka Alaya, takes the eighteen elements as its object. Therefore, in the verses of the Treatise on Distinguishing the Middle and the Extremes, it says: "The sense faculties and objects and the self-consciousness, from the appearing consciousness, arise like that." Relying on these treatises, etc., the eighth takes the eighteen elements as its object.
