I, the very absence of faults, the very certainty of Dharma, the very abiding of Dharma, the ultimate limit of reality, the realm of space, and the inconceivable sphere. Likewise, what arises from other teachings cannot be exhausted by speaking of it here. Here, for the time being, the nature of being of one taste is taught, starting from three aspects of meaning. That which is called "Thusness" (tathatā), as it is said in the treatise established as only consciousness: "That which is called 'Thus' is the very reality, showing that it is not unreal. That which is called 'ness' is the very permanence, showing very well that it is not change." Thus, it is the very reality, because it is always and in all circumstances just as it is, it is called Thusness. This is the unchanging true meaning, as it is said. Has it not been taught before that the ultimate truth of reality is beyond words? Why is it called Thusness here? The answer to this objection is as it is said in the treatise established as only consciousness: "Thusness is also just a name given by imputation. To refute the assumption that it does not exist, it is said to exist. To refute the assumption that it truly exists, it is said to be emptiness. Lest one assume that what is not real is an illusion, it is shown to be real. Because the meaning is not inverted, it is called Thusness," as it is shown. Among these, that which is called ultimate meaning (paramārtha), ultimate (parama) is like this: it is ultimate wisdom (jñāna). Meaning (artha) is the meaning of object (viṣaya). Thus, this Thusness, because it has become the meaning of the object to be cognized by two kinds of ultimate wisdom, it is called ultimate meaning. Therefore, in the explanation of the treatise, it is said: "The ultimate truth should be known as the very nature of the perfectly established." Why are the seven kinds of Thusness called ultimate truth? Answer: Because it is cognized by two kinds of ultimate wisdom. That is, there are transcendental wisdom and subsequent worldly wisdom. This ultimate meaning is not the object of other wisdom because it is without elaboration. Other meanings besides that are

It is as it arises from the two teachings. Among these, what is called "the selflessness of phenomena" is, as it says in the treatise *Abhidharmasamuccaya*: "What is the characteristic of selflessness? It is like this: Just as those who speak of self conceive of the characteristic of self, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases are not that characteristic. Therefore, because the aggregates, elements, and sense bases do not have the characteristic of self, it is called the characteristic of selflessness." The treatise *Abhidharmasamuccayavyākhyā* also teaches the same. What is the difference between emptiness and selflessness? It is said that there are different explanations in the various teachings. If combined with the treatise *Abhidharmakośa*, there are four different explanations. Therefore, it says in that very text: "Because it is contrary to the view of self, it is emptiness. Because it is contrary to the view of self, it is not self." Furthermore, it says in that very text: "Because it is separated from the diseased person, it is emptiness. Because it has no independence, it is not self." Furthermore, it says in that very text: "Because there is no self here, it is emptiness. Because its own nature is not self, it is not self." Furthermore, it says in that very text: "Because it is the antidote to the view of self, one meditates on the aspect of emptiness. Because it is the antidote to the view of self, one meditates on the aspect of selflessness." In the treatise *Mahāvibhāṣā*, there are also two explanations, which are in accordance with the two entities that appear in the *Abhidharmakośa*. In the treatise *Tarkajvālā*, it says: "Because there is no self that can control, it is emptiness. Because it does not accord with the characteristic of self, it is not self." Furthermore, it says in that very text: "Because it is the antidote to the view of self, one meditates on the aspect of emptiness. Because it is the antidote to the view of self, one meditates on the aspect of selflessness." In the commentary on the *Ārya Prajñāpāramitā*, it says: "Not seeing substance is called emptiness. Not seeing self is called selflessness." In the treatise *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, it says: "What is the characteristic of emptiness? It is like this: Where something is absent, it is truly seen as empty by that reasoning. Whatever is left here exists here." Reasoning is certain and
