That is, such mindfulness is the mindfulness of the body, the mindfulness of feelings, the mindfulness of the mind, and the mindfulness of phenomena. In the scriptures, according to correct reasoning, why is mindfulness established on the object of wisdom? It is said that wisdom is maintained and abides by the power of mindfulness. In the Abhidharma-kośa-bhāṣya, the Vaibhāṣikas say: Wisdom is maintained by the power of mindfulness, and it abides by its own authority. However, in the true sense, it is by the authority of wisdom that mindfulness abides in the object, because those who see things as they truly are can clearly remember them. The great commentary, the Vibhāṣā, says: Thus, by the power of mindfulness, one can eliminate one's own nature, hence it is called mindfulness. Here, one's own nature refers to the five aggregates with outflows, because by the authority of mindfulness, they can be well eliminated. The commentary on the Holy Perfection of Wisdom says: Following wisdom and abiding correctly on the object is called mindfulness. The Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra says: What is the meaning of mindfulness? Answer: That on which mindfulness is established and by which mindfulness is established is called mindfulness. Among these, on what is mindfulness established? It is said that mindfulness is established on the object. By what is mindfulness established? It is said that whatever gathers samādhi by wisdom and mindfulness is the nature of mindfulness. Other than that, the mind and mental factors that are in accordance with them are mixed mindfulness. Among these, if one distinguishes the nature, the teachers of the Sarvāstivāda school, in conjunction with desire, say that it is the nature of wisdom. If it is in conjunction with the teachings of the Mahāyāna, it is said to be the nature of mindfulness and wisdom. Therefore, in the Abhidharmasamuccaya, the nature of mindfulness is as follows: namely, wisdom and mindfulness. In the sutras of the Bhagavan, in the inferior ones

and so on, because there is subsequent conceptualization, and because it is said to have mindfulness, it is said to be in order. In the treatise "Yogacarabhumi-sastra", it says that correctly gathering samadhi with wisdom and mindfulness is the mindfulness of self-nature. Furthermore, in that itself, there are also three types: arising from hearing, arising from thinking, and arising from meditation. Arising from hearing and thinking is only with defilements. Arising from meditation, there is also with defilements, and there is also with non-defilements. Regarding the explanation of the meaning of the words there, there are six sutra sentences. In the "Samdhinirmochana Sutra", seven sentences appear, and two types are divided from the sixth sentence, like this: the nature of mindfulness arising, abiding, and meditating is not abandoned. In the "Definite Explanation of Words Sutra", Acharya Real Truth divides and teaches ten types of sentences. Therefore, in the notes of Acharya Real Truth, it says: In the sutra, some monks ask, what does the Blessed One show with the ten sentences such as mindfulness, object, etc.? It is said: In order to show ten meanings, these ten sentences are spoken. The first sentence, "mindfulness knows and focuses", that is the mindfulness of the object. The second sentence, "the nature of mindfulness", that is the mindfulness of self-nature. The third sentence, "the non-conformity of mindfulness", shows the four inversions that do not conform to the path of mindfulness. The fourth sentence, "the antidote path of mindfulness", shows the path that has become the antidote, which is the antidote to the four inversions of mixed mindfulness. The fifth sentence, "the meditation of mindfulness", that is mindfulness

That which is called "intention" is the path of explanation. For example, these eight consciousnesses. That which is called "eighth non-abandonment" is the path of meditation, up to the Vajra-like Samadhi mind. That which is called "ninth increase" is the path of no-more-learning, which is the mind below the Vajra-like Samadhi. That which is called "tenth perfection" is the path of miraculous power, benefiting sentient beings with the three wheels of Dharma, such as with miraculous powers, mind reading, prophecy, and truthful teachings. Just as the four mindfulnesses have ten sentences, so too, from the four right abandonments to the eightfold noble path, they should be combined, as explained in detail there. Here, the explanation is not like that, but each Dharma gate is combined with six sentences. The first two sentences should be understood like the aggregates. The following four sentences are inconsistent with the aggregates, etc., that is, obtaining the aspect that is inconsistent with the antidote of mindfulness. The so-called "obtaining the aspect that is inconsistent with the antidote of mindfulness" refers to showing that the four mindfulnesses have become the antidote to the four inversions. For example, by practicing the impurity of the body with body mindfulness, it becomes the antidote to the inversion of purity. By practicing the absence of pleasure in feeling with feeling mindfulness, it becomes the antidote to the inversion of pleasure. By practicing the impermanence of the mind with mind mindfulness, it becomes the antidote to the inversion of permanence. By practicing the selflessness of phenomena with phenomena mindfulness, it becomes the antidote to the inversion of self. The extensive explanation is as explained in the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*. The three sentences beginning with "obtaining the practice of mindfulness" refer to explaining the four mindfulnesses from the perspective of the four types of practice. These four practices, in the Sarvāstivāda treatises, the manifestation of mindfulness is also called the practice of present intention, and also called the practice of attainment, that is, the ability to generate future attainment and the aspect of what will be attained.
