It is said thus. Firstly, being remote from sound means that the sounds of the city are not heard there. Secondly, being remote from places of cutting and felling means that firewood and the like are not taken there. Thirdly, being remote from places of strife means that all afflictions disturb virtuous Dharma, hence it is called strife. If one dwells in such a place, one can subdue afflictions, so it is called being remote from strife. From one krosha up to a hundred thousand yojanas is called a solitary place, so it is said. The Sarvastivadins say that one krosha has five hundred bows. The Valid Measurement school says that one krosha has one thousand bows, and one bow is equal to one and a half bows, which is one thousand five hundred bows. In the Abhidharma texts, it is said that four cubits make one bow, and five hundred bows make one krosha. Two and a half kroshas and above are called a solitary place. It is said in the sutras that one krosha in the north can be considered established. In the Great Vibhasha Shastra, it is said that four cubits make one bow, and five hundred bows make a solitary place, and beyond that it is also called a borderland. Therefore, five hundred bows can be considered as establishing one krosha in a level land. Why is that? Because the level land is close to the city, and even on flat ground, sounds cannot be heard, while the north is uneven and sounds can be heard, so the krosha in the north is larger. The Abhidharmakosha elaborates on this in detail. Therefore, the verses therein say: 'The finest dust, dust particles, gold water, rabbit, sheep, cow, sunlight dust, louse, barley, and finger joint, each subsequent one is seven times the previous one. Twenty-four finger joints make one cubit, four cubits make one bow, five hundred bows make one krosha, and eight kroshas make one yojana.' So it is said. The commentary on this says that the finest dust is the first, and the finger joint is the last, so each subsequent one is seven times the previous one.

It should be known that it is like this: seven extremely small dust particles make one minute dust particle. Seven minute dust particles make one gold dust particle. Seven gold dust particles make one water dust particle. Seven water dust particles make one rabbit dust particle. Seven rabbit dust particles make one sheep dust particle. Seven sheep dust particles make one cow dust particle. Seven cow dust particles make one sunbeam dust particle. Seven sunbeam dust particles make one nit. Seven nits make one barleycorn. Seven barleycorns make one finger joint. Three finger joints make one finger. Twenty-four fingers in width make one cubit. Four cubits standing upright make one bow. Five hundred bows standing upright make one krosa. One krosa is the length of the road from a village to a monastery. Eight krosas make one yojana, it is said. To distinguish extensively is as explained in the great treatise of the Abhidharma. In his commentary on the Summary of the Great Vehicle, Master Vasubandhu said that completely abandoning the city, a place more than one krosa away, is called a monastery. In the Treatise on the Ten Abodes, it says that being far away from the talk of bustle and hustle is called a monastery. In the Yogacarabhumi-sastra, it is said that a dwelling place that is secluded from villages and towns, whether it is a monastery, a forest, or a border area, those who dwell in these places are called aranyaka. In the Sutra of Cultivating Merits, it also says that the dharma of a monastery is to be secluded from bustle and hustle, and to dwell in a very quiet place. What is called very quiet is to be far away from places where many people can cause harm, and from places of carelessness. Even if it is close, do not get closer than one krosa, as this is very beneficial to the body for a long time. Having become secluded in this way, the mind is also very far away from the five obscurations of the five desires, this is called aranya, so it is said, and it is also said in the commentary on the Noble Perfection of Wisdom. Then, there are very many monks who also rely on that forest and live around me, this refers to the second
