It is the place where pride arises. False pride is like this: for those who do not possess qualities, the place where pride arises, thinking, "I possess qualities." This is stated in the scriptures. The Abhidharma-samuccaya and the Miscellaneous Abhidharma-samuccaya, as well as the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, also explain this in accordance. In the commentary on the Holy Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, it says: "A person with supereminent pride is a disciple of the Buddha who, having attained meditation and samādhi, but not having attained the fruit of the noble ones, thinks, 'I have attained it,' and is proud." This is what is said in the scriptures. The so-called nine types of pride are mentioned in the scripture 'Generating Wisdom,' which states that there are nine types of pride, namely: 'I am the most excellent,' 'I am equal to him,' 'I am inferior to him,' 'There is one who is superior to me,' 'There is one who is equal to me,' 'There is one who is inferior to me,' 'There is no one who is superior to me,' 'There is no one who is equal to me,' and 'There is no one who is inferior to me.' This is what is stated in the scriptures. In the scripture 'Explanation,' only the names of the three types of pride are mentioned. Therefore, in that very scripture, it is said that the three types of pride mentioned in the Sutra are 'the pride of thinking I am the most excellent' and 'the pride of thinking I am inferior.' It is explained that these actually show the nine types of pride, so there is no contradiction in meaning. These seven and nine types of pride, when combined with the scriptures established in the Consciousness-Only school, are said to arise from five types of objects. Therefore, in that very scripture, it is said that the distinctions of these are also seven or nine types, arising from three aspects and from the objects of self and qualities. Among these, the pride of the seven types of pride, excessive pride, pride beyond pride, and slight pride arise depending on the three aspects. The pride of 'I am' arises depending on the object of self. False pride and supereminent pride arise depending on the object of qualities, and excessive pride arises depending on the aspects of medium and great. Therefore, the scripture 'Dharma-vijaya Abhidharma'

From the Compendium of All Kinds, pride arises from the two states of small and medium. Based on the states of medium and great, great pride arises. Based on the state of great, pride beyond pride arises. Based on the state of small, a slightly conceited pride arises. From clinging to the five aggregates of appropriation as self and mine, the pride of thinking "I" arises. Without having attained special qualities, but thinking that one has attained special qualities, manifest pride arises. Even without truly having qualities, but thinking that one possesses qualities, wrong pride arises, so it is said. There are also two explanations for distinguishing the nine aspects of pride. If combined with the Treatise on Generating Knowledge, as stated in the Treasury Treatise, these nine aspects arise from the previous seven aspects of pride, namely from the previously mentioned pride, great pride, and slightly conceited pride. If these three aspects rely on views to generate actions, then three special aspects will manifestly arise. The first three are, in order, great pride, pride, and slightly conceited pride. The middle three are, in order, slightly conceited pride, my pride, and great pride. The last three are, in order, pride, great pride, and slightly conceited pride, so it is said. In detail, it is as it appears in the Great Treatise on Specific Explanations. If combined with the explanation of the aspects of pride in the Treatise on Explaining the Aspects of Directions, then the aspect of pride that thinks "I am superior" arises from three types of pride, namely from pride, great pride, and pride beyond pride. These three are due to the differences in conceptualizing objects that are inferior, equal, and superior. Therefore, if the explanation from the Treatise on Explaining the Aspects of Directions in the Great Treatise on Specific Explanations is combined, then the pride that thinks "I am superior" is the three types of pride.
