What follows is the answer to the previous teaching. This can be divided into three types: answering briefly, stating one's own views, and stating one's own thoughts. This is the first type: I see that in the realm of sentient beings, countless sentient beings rely on the pride of manifest cognition to communicate knowledge. The characteristics of communicating knowledge will be explained later. The so-called person with the pride of manifest cognition mentioned here also has different explanations. If combined with the treatises of the Sarvastivada school, there are four types of people who generate the pride of manifest cognition, namely ordinary people and the three lower fruits. As stated in the Great Vibhasha Shastra, there are also three different explanations for generating the pride of manifest cognition. Some say that ordinary people generate five types of pride, namely the four roots of virtue and the four fruits. Stream-enterers generate four types of pride, except for the first. Once-returners generate three types of pride, except for the first two. Non-returners generate two types of pride, except for the first three. Arhats do not have the pride of manifest cognition. Some say that ordinary people generate nine types of pride, namely the contaminated roots of virtue, the four fruits of stream-entry, and the four types of people who abide in the fruits. Stream-enterers generate seven types of pride, except for the first two. Once-returners generate six types of pride, except for the previous three. Once-returners generate five types of pride, except for the previous four. Non-returners generate four types of pride, except for the previous five. Those who abide in the fruit of non-return generate three types of pride, except for the previous six. Those who are oriented towards Arhatship generate two types of pride, except for the previous seven. Arhats themselves do not have the pride of manifest cognition. Those who are oriented towards the fruit of stream-entry do not have the meaning of generating the pride of manifest cognition.

The noble ones spoken of by the peripatetics also generate manifest pride towards the special virtuous roots that are contaminated, therefore they generate pride towards the six noble ones as before, it is said in the scriptures, as explained in the extensive commentary itself. The Sautrāntikas also agree with the Sarvāstivādins' views, so there is no contradiction, because that school has many branches. If this is combined with the teachings of the Mahāyāna, it mostly agrees with the treatises of the two schools, because manifest pride is said to exist in ordinary beings and noble ones including learners, therefore in the treatises established as only consciousness, what is pride? Its characteristic is being self-satisfied and arrogant towards others, it obscures non-pride and is the basis for generating suffering. This pride has nine distinctions and types, namely, arising from three aspects and from self and qualities. All of these are understood to be abandoned through seeing and meditation. In the state of noble ones, pride also manifests, so there is no contradiction in the types of pride arising from this. The seven types of pride are: In the "Treatise on the Differentiation of the Five Aggregates", what is pride? It is pride, great pride, excessive pride, ego-pride, arrogant pride, false pride, and wrong pride. Pride is: thinking "I am superior" to someone smaller, or being conceited thinking "I am equal" to someone equal. Great pride is: being conceited thinking "I am superior" to someone equal, or "I am equal" to someone superior. Excessive pride is: being conceited thinking "I am superior" to someone superior. Ego-pride is: being conceited by truly regarding the five aggregates of appropriation as "I" or "mine". Arrogant pride is: being conceited thinking "I have attained" higher qualities that have not been attained. False pride is: thinking "I am only a little inferior" due to a great difference in qualities.
