Because one has not attained [liberation], one will not be freed from the bonds of the unfortunate realms. These two types of bonds are also explained differently. The learned Yancang said that there are two explanations of this by scholars in the Indian region. Some say that the Sarvastivadins say that the aspect of signs is called the bond of signs. For example, due to the power of the aspect of the cause of defiled dharmas, minds in the form of seeing, etc., do not understand that defiled dharmas are like illusions, etc., and that even what does not exist appears to exist, and due to the power of ignorance, they grasp that form, mind, etc., truly exist. If combined with the explanation itself, since the sign itself is a bond, it is called the bond of signs. Among the six explanations, this is an explanation made from the perspective of the complete grasping of karma. The afflictions that bind from the aspect of the cause itself are called the bonds of the unfortunate realms, because they are very coarse. This is also an explanation of the complete grasping of karma, and should be understood as before. The concise meaning of this is that the aspect of the cause that is the object is called the bond of signs. The aspect of seeing that is the object and afflictions such as desire are called the bonds of the unfortunate realms. Therefore, in the *Yogacarabhumi*, the alaya-vijnana should also be realized, and it should be realized that one is bound by the external bond of signs and bound by the internal bond of the unfortunate realms, as explained in detail therein. Some say that the bond of signs is the nature of the afflicted mind, which means that because it is associated with the afflicted mind, due to the power of the four afflictions, the signs of the afflictions associated with the six consciousnesses are not understood as illusion-like objects, so the afflicted mind is called the bond of signs. Combined with this explanation, the sign is, for example...

, because the afflicted mind binds with the aspect of a cause, since it is the binding of an aspect. It is called the binding of an aspect, and it is distinguished from the six distinctions by making it the master. The binding of the evil realms is also twofold. First, the afflictions that are associated with the six consciousnesses are called evil realms, and this meaning is as previously stated. Second, due to the power of the two obscurations of affliction and knowledge, the contaminated five aggregates and other phenomena are made incapable, so this is called the binding of the evil realms. Some say that evil realms refer to the seeds and faculties of the appearance of views of afflictions, and binding refers to the seeds of the appearance of the aspects of afflictions. Furthermore, the manifested aspects are also said to be two kinds of binding. If it is combined with the treatises that explain the three natures of non-inherent existence, it says in it: From the sutra of liberation from existence, the nature of complete imputation is called the affliction of aspects. The nature of dependence on others is called the affliction of evil realms. Furthermore, in the same sutra, from the section that distinguishes the affliction of aspects and the affliction of evil realms, it says: When the nature of complete imputation arises, two kinds of afflictions bind sentient beings, namely the affliction of aspects and the affliction of evil realms. Among them, the affliction of aspects is the nature of complete imputation. The affliction of evil realms is the nature of dependence on others. This affliction is established in this way because it is established by holding the nature of dependence on others as complete imputation. The sutra says this, and in the explanation of this sutra, it says that complete imputation is called the affliction of aspects, and the aspect is the aspect of form, and the affliction of the aspect of form is called the affliction of making a cause, and the nature of dependence on others is the true affliction. Among them, it also shows the lightness and heaviness,

The nature of thought is said to be affliction because it is solely the cause of afflictions, and therefore it is light. The nature of other-powered is truly the essence of affliction, and therefore it is said to be heavy. The treatise 'Detailed Explanation' explains similarly to this. Therefore, from that very text, the nature of other-powered is the nature of signs and bad states. Why is it said to be the nature of other-powered? Because these two aspects arise by mutually causing each other. Thus, signs cause bad states, and bad states also cause signs. Furthermore, if compared with one of the commentaries on the 'Summary of the Great Vehicle,' it says that there are two kinds of knots: the knot of signs and the knot of bad states. Among these, the knot of signs is difficult to untie, and the knot of bad states is difficult to prevent. The mind's conceptualization of the objects of phenomena is called the knot of signs. The arising of afflictions such as desire and so on due to the power of this conceptualization is called the knot of bad states. When one attains non-conceptual wisdom, the knot of signs is initially untied. Because the knot of signs does not arise, the knot of bad states also ceases along with it. The teacher's commentary on 'True Meaning' says that the knot of signs is the grasping of the discriminating consciousness of conceptualization. Thus, all six consciousnesses grasp external objects as existing and, because they do not understand that everything is made by their own mind, they cling to views and signs. Because everything is universally conceptualized, desire, hatred, and so on arise from nothing. These words do not appear in the newly translated commentary on the 'Summary of the Great Vehicle' or in the works composed by the teacher Vasubandhu. In the 'Sutra Explaining the Meaning of Words,' it says that there are the bonds of various signs and the bonds of bad states. Furthermore, in that very text, there are the knot of signs and the bad state.
