Because it is not different, it is extremely profound. Because both oneness and otherness can be realized, it is difficult to realize. Furthermore, because it is not the object of wisdom arising from hearing, it is called extremely subtle. Because it is not the object of the wisdom of thinking, it is called extremely profound. Because it is not the object of the wisdom of meditation for ordinary beings, even those of the two vehicles, and newly initiated Bodhisattvas, it is called difficult to realize. Thus it is said. If combined with the explanation of the Ācārya of True Reality, the third of the three is the most excellent. Therefore, in the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, it is said: 'Suchness and the Dharmadhātu are the objects of transcendental wisdom and subsequent attainment, and non-conceptual wisdom, so they are not the objects of the three kinds of wisdom. Why? Because the wisdom of the nature of Suchness is extremely profound and extremely subtle, while the wisdom of hearing is coarse and not profound, so it cannot be seen.' Because it is the ultimate truth, it cannot be measured by thought. Because it is a transcendental dharma, it cannot be traversed by meditation. Thus it is said. Bhagavan, in this place, in a certain region, I have seen many Bodhisattvas who have truly entered the stage of practice through faith, gathered together, contemplating and practicing the nature of the ultimate truth and whether the nature of conditioned phenomena is one or different. And so on, this shows the second chapter, which shows many disputes. This can also be divided into two: one is the general display of gathering together and engaging in disputes, and the other is the separate display of the three kinds of examination. Among these, this is the first. 'I, in this place,' refers to this world, this Sahā world, or this Jambudvipa. In the other two versions, this phrase is incomplete. 'A certain region' refers to places like Rājagṛha, not a pure land, because it is the place of taming for Bodhisattvas who practice through faith. The stage of practice through faith refers to those who abide in the stage of the first countless eons before the beginning of the eon. Therefore, the treatise

In the Great Chapter Collection, it is said that a person who practices with faith will be perfected in the first kalpa and countless kalpas. Furthermore, in one different version of the Mahāyāna Collection, a person who practices with faith has four names, namely: ten kinds of faith, ten kinds of knowledge, ten kinds of practices, and ten kinds of dedications. Because Bodhisattvas have four kinds of connections to the noble path, there are four kinds of people. Just as the path of entering the stream has four preparatory connections. What is the seed of these four, that is called the ground of practicing with faith, and it is said that the meditation practiced in the first countless kalpas will be perfected. In short, the name of this ground also has four aspects: the first is called the ground of aspiration and faith, as stated in one different version of the Mahāyāna Collection and the Sutra of Definitive Explanation of Words. The second is called the ground of practice with faith, as stated in the Sandhinirmocana Sutra. The third is called the ground of practicing with faith, as stated in the Mahāyāna Collection, the Yogācārabhūmi, the Compendium of Grounds, and the Sutra of Explaining Excellent Morality. The fourth is called the ground of mental faith, such as the chapter on Pure Contemplation that appears in the Yogācārabhūmi. Why does the name of this ground have so many variations? Because the name of this ground, in short, also has two aspects: the first is the general name, called mental faith, which is the nature of one dharma from desire, faith, and conviction. Therefore, in the Yogācārabhūmi and others, it is shown as mental faith. The second is the specific name, which also has three aspects. The first is aspiration and faith, which is a name corresponding to faith. From the determination of the five objects individually, it is the nature of desire. Therefore, in the Treatise on the Establishment of Consciousness Only, faith is like desire. The second is practice with faith,

Eleven, is the nature of having faith. Therefore, in the commentary on the Prajñāpāramitā, it is said, "With faith, one can enter the ocean of the Buddha's Dharma, and with wisdom, one can cross over." The third is called acting with aspiration, the five objects are determined separately, which is the nature of aspiration. Therefore, in the commentary on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha by the teacher Asaṅga, it is said, "It is called acting with aspiration because one has not directly realized suchness, and relies on aspiration to diligently practice all practices." Furthermore, it says there that the first attainment of aspiration is like this: among the grounds, whoever attains extreme aspiration will definitely hold that "this is the correct view as it is" regarding what others have taught. On this ground, because suchness has not yet been directly realized, there will be such disputes. In that assembly, some Bodhisattvas say this: the nature of ultimate truth and the nature of conditioned phenomena are not different. Saying like this, etc., is the second examination, showing the teaching by distinguishing three aspects. There are three divisions within that. This is the first. Apart from all dharmas, because there is ultimate truth aimed at by supreme wisdom, it is called ultimate truth, and there is no conventional truth aimed at by conventional wisdom. Some Bodhisattvas also say this: the nature of ultimate truth and the nature of conditioned phenomena are not without difference, but the nature of ultimate truth is different from the nature of conditioned phenomena. Saying like this, this is the second showing of examination, saying that there is a nature of ultimate truth apart from all dharmas. Other Bodhisattvas, being doubtful and hesitant, say this: among those Bodhisattvas, who is without error, who is false? Who is practicing properly, who is not practicing properly? Saying like this, some say this: the nature of ultimate truth is the nature of conditioned phenomena.
