Without the conduct of a bhikṣu, yet possessing the qualities of a bhikṣu; possessing the conduct of a bhikṣu, and also possessing the qualities of a bhikṣu; without the conduct of a bhikṣu, and also without the qualities of a bhikṣu, it is said. The meaning of this example is that, in this way, the understanding of worldly people, as well as subsequent inference, and the knowledge of faith, these three can only obtain the taste of coarse objects of experience with outflows, but cannot obtain the nature of the three freedoms that are beyond the world and without outflows, as well as the rich taste of suchness, which is the inner self-awareness. The teacher Paramārtha also explained that this is consistent with the meaning. For a long time, being devoted to the attachment of desire, and being completely burned by the fires that completely burn with desires, one cannot contemplate, infer, or have faith in the bliss of extreme solitude, which is free from the nature of inner form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, this is said to be the second example of abandoning the bliss of the five qualities of desire. This is the bliss of extreme solitude among the four kinds of bliss, therefore, in the *Yogācārabhūmi*, it is said: "Being solitary from desires, being solitary from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, having completed the first dhyāna, the joy and bliss arising from solitude is called the bliss of extreme solitude." In the first and last, the word "for example" is mentioned, while the middle three are briefly stated because of the Tathāgata's skillful words. Or it is for the sake of establishing brevity. The mention of Brahmā in the other two examples is because of the different thoughts of the translators. Or it is because there are differences in the Indian examples themselves. Among them, the so-called "for a long time" means for a long time in saṃsāra. The so-called "attachment to desire" is the nature of faith in desire. The so-called "faith" is the nature of faith from the five individually determined ones. Here, when desire is mentioned, it actually takes faith. Regarding "being completely burned by the fires that completely burn with desires," there are two explanations, some say that the so-called "desires" refers to objects such as form.

The former ones. Those five objects are not just one; because they generate desire and attachment, those five objects are called "desires." A person who is completely burned refers to the attachment to those five objects, and because it harms renunciation, it is called a completely burning fire. Therefore, in the commentary on the Prajnaparamita, it says: "If someone develops a strong attachment to those five objects, then they will be completely burned by the fire of afflictions that bind them together, harming and burning the body, just as fire burns the body." Furthermore, in that same text, it says that a person named Nyapatupaka, because he sought desires everywhere but could not achieve them as he wished, became very sad and tormented in his heart, and was burned by the fire of desire, eventually committing suicide by burning himself to death. This is as extensively described in that text. If we combine this explanation with the previous content, then desires are the burning of fire. Therefore, it is called the burning of the fire of desire. This is an explanation from the perspective of the owner. Some say that the so-called desires are the attachment to the five objects. Therefore, these five attachments themselves are called the completely burning fire. Therefore, in the Yogacarabhumi-sastra, it says: "Burning these five desires is like holding a grass lamp in the wind." This is an explanation from the perspective of the six consciousnesses. The so-called inner form, etc., refers to inner samadhi. It is called "inner" in order to distinguish it from external distractions. The so-called separation from the nature of inner form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, and the bliss of extreme solitude, indicates that it corresponds to the samadhi of the first dhyana and possesses the feeling of bliss. Because the attachment to the five objects of the desire realm is completely abandoned, and the body is universally filled with bliss, it is called the bliss of extreme solitude. In the true sense, although the samadhi of the first dhyana completely abandons the five obscurations, the obscuration of desire is the first. Because it is mentioned first, it also implies the subsequent content.
