So it is said. Some say that the eye faculty and consciousness are called seeing. In its treatise, the Abhidharma Samuccaya, it is taught that whatever is experienced by the eye is the meaning of seeing. Furthermore, in the Yogacarabhumi, it is said that relying on the eye, external forms are made manifest, therefore the eye faculty and consciousness are the nature of seeing. If that is so, why is it said in the Abhidharma Samuccaya: Does the eye see form? Or is it seen by consciousness and so on? It is said: The eye does not see external forms, nor do consciousness and so on, because all dharmas have no agent. It is only a designation due to the power of aggregation that is called seeing. Furthermore, among the six faculties, the eye is the main one for seeing forms, because it is not consciousness and so on, so it is said that the eye sees all forms. In the Yogacarabhumi, it is said that based on the ultimate reasoning, neither the eye and so on, nor their consciousness. Why is that? Because dharmas arise from many causes by their own nature, and they are momentary, without an agent, and because the eye and so on are the main ones according to conventional knowledge. It is said that seeing is merely imputed to them, as it is explained in detail there. Why is seeing attributed to both the eye faculty and consciousness? It is said that in order to refute the idea that the eye faculty and consciousness are each seeing separately, it is said that seeing is neither the eye faculty nor consciousness, but it is not refuting the aggregation of the faculty and consciousness, because seeing is the name for both the faculty and consciousness. Furthermore, there is no contradiction because seeing, hearing, distinguishing, seeing by consciousness, and seeing form are not the same. If combined with the commentary on the Prajnaparamita, it says that four dharmas are combined as follows: the ear faculty, consciousness, mind consciousness, and sound.

It is said that "hearing" is spoken of as what is heard from time to time. The details are as they appear in that very place. What is called hearing is the nature of hearing others and the wisdom of thinking, etc. This is the nature of the mind that corresponds to the consciousness of the mind. If so, why is it stated in the Yogācārabhūmi that hearing is the measure of the Ārya's teachings? Answer: There are two types of Ārya's teachings. The first is called the measure of the Ārya's teachings for all the teachings of the Ārya, because this is the word of the Ārya itself, which is the measure. It is called the measure of the Ārya's teachings, and this is explained from the perspective of completely holding the activity. The second is called the measure of the Ārya's teachings for the wisdom of hearing, etc., because this is the word of the Ārya itself, which is the measure. This is called the measure of the Ārya's teachings from the perspective of the master. The Yogācārabhūmi also relies on this, therefore the wisdom of hearing, etc., is called the measure of the Ārya's teachings. The consciousness of the mind that is inferred after thinking and measuring oneself is the nature of distinguishing differences. The four consciousnesses of the ear, etc., and the consciousness of the mind that is the measure of direct perception, are consciousnesses. In the Yogācārabhūmi, the terminology based on consciousness is as follows: Therefore, what is said to be known, perceived, touched, and manifested separately by oneself, among which the ear consciousness is called knowing. The two consciousnesses of the nose and tongue are called perceiving. The body consciousness is called touching. The consciousness of the mind that is the measure of direct perception is called manifesting. Or, all of the ear consciousness, etc., are merely the senses. As stated in the Abhidharmasamuccaya, etc., the experience within oneself is the meaning of consciousness, and all that is said to be perceived by the senses, etc., is the internal experience, and all is within.

Because it is a valid cognition and the experienced object is the same. Is the ālaya-vijñāna called seeing, etc.? Answer: In the true sense, the afflicted mind is not encompassed by valid cognition, so seeing, etc., are not established. Because the ālaya-vijñāna is direct perception. Included in consciousness, in the Mahāmāyā Sutra, etc., it is not shown for the time being because it is mainly based on the six consciousnesses. If combined with the Yogācārabhūmi, seeing, etc., are distinguished based on the meaning of the three valid cognitions. Therefore, in that itself, it is analyzed based on the three valid cognitions based on four differences. Among them, what is seeing, what is the name of consciousness, this is direct perception. What is the name of distinguishing differences, this is inference. What is the name of hearing, this is the valid cognition of reliable scripture. Are the sense faculties such as the eye direct perception? If it is said to be direct perception, why does the treatise Dharmanyāya-dvāra say: Here, direct perception is like this, non-discriminating wisdom, which is true wisdom, which abandons names and forms, etc., on things such as form. If it is not direct perception, why does the treatise Abhidharma-samuccaya say: What is seen by the eye faculty is the meaning of seeing. And in the Yogācārabhūmi it is said: Seeing is direct perception. Answer: There are two explanations for this. Some say that the sense faculty is direct perception, therefore in the Yogācārabhūmi, etc.
