It is called differentiation. How does differentiation occur? It is when the perception of seeing arises from repeatedly thinking about a previously seen object, or when it does not arise from a previous seeing, that is called differentiation after seeing. Explaining the differentiation that arises after hearing and knowing is merely a combination of words. The mind of differentiation also arises after the three minds of seeing, hearing, and knowing. It also arises after not seeing, not hearing, and knowing. For example, when one speaks of seeing something that was not seen before, and the perception of seeing arises, that is called arising after not seeing. The differentiation of not hearing and not knowing is also the same. In relation to the treatise of the Treasury (Abhidharmakośa), there are two teachers' explanations on this. Some teachers say that the mind that arises from the five faculties directly perceiving an object is called seeing. Furthermore, what is heard through transmission is called hearing. What appears by activating one's own mind and inferring various reasons is called differentiation. What is directly perceived by the mind is called knowing. For each of the five objects, there are four different types of seeing, hearing, differentiation, and knowing. For the object of mind, there are three: hearing, differentiation, and knowing, but not seeing. This is explained in detail in that very text. This teacher's view is that what is attained by the five faculties through direct perception is called seeing because it clarifies the five objects. The sixteen types of objects that are heard through transmission based on scriptural authority are called hearing. The six objects that appear by activating one's own mind and inferring various reasons based on inference are called differentiation. The six objects that are directly perceived by the mind's consciousness based on direct perception are called knowing. In this way, direct perception follows the five consciousnesses.

Or, with valid cognition, directly realize the five objects; or, with consciousness abiding in the valid cognition of direct perception, directly realize the Dharma; or, with the mind abiding in samadhi, directly make the six objects. The former teachers taught as follows: Seeing directly with the eye is called seeing. Hearing through transmission from others is called hearing. Measuring by moving one's own mind and thinking in various ways is called distinguishing. Experiencing within oneself and making manifest oneself is called distinguishing consciousness. The intention of this is taught as follows: Whatever is seen by the valid cognition of direct perception of the eye is called seeing, and the eye alone is called seeing, because the object of past form appears very clearly. Therefore, the eye alone is called seeing. Whatever of the six objects is heard through transmission from others based on scriptural authority is called hearing. Relying on inference, moving one's own mind, Whatever is thought and measured in various ways is called distinguishing. Furthermore, the ear, nose, tongue, and body, which have become the measure of direct perception, rely on the four objects experienced by oneself, and the measure of direct perception of the mind faculty, whatever of the six objects is made manifest by oneself, all of these are taught as distinguishing consciousness. In conjunction with this explanation, the seer is only the eye. The hearer and the discriminator are only the mind. The distinguishing consciousness is also the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind faculty. Among the six objects, form can generate all four types. The five objects, such as sound, generate the other's hearing, discrimination, and the three distinguishing consciousnesses. Here, the treatises of the Mahayana also differ from each other. In the commentary on the Prajnaparamita: Whatever is known by the distinguishing consciousness of the eye is called seeing. Whatever is known by the distinguishing consciousness of the ear is called hearing. The three distinguishing consciousnesses of nose, tongue, and body

What is known by the mothers is called discernment. What is obtained by the consciousness of mind is called consciousness, it is said. In detail, it is as explained in that very text. In the treatise *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, the meanings of seeing, hearing, discerning, and consciousness are as follows: What is experienced by the eye is the meaning of seeing. What is experienced by the ear is the meaning of hearing. What one thinks and measures as 'this is like this, that is like that' is the meaning of discerning. What is experienced internally by oneself is the meaning of consciousness, it is shown. In the *Yogācārabhūmi*, what are the four terms? The term of seeing, the term of hearing, the term of discerning, and the term that relies on consciousness. The term that relies on seeing is as follows: When someone relies on the eye, makes external forms manifest, and then relies on that to name others, that is called the term of seeing. The term that relies on hearing is as follows: When someone hears from another and then relies on that to name others. The term that relies on discerning is as follows: When someone has not seen or heard, but thinks and measures and closely examines it himself, and then relies on that to name others. The term that relies on consciousness is as follows: When someone individually knows, understands, touches, and manifests within himself, and then relies on that to name others, it is said. Regarding the term 'seeing,' there are also three different explanations. Some say that the faculty of the eye is called seeing, therefore, what is experienced by the eye is the meaning of seeing, it is said. Some say that the consciousness of the eye is called seeing, therefore, in the *Yogācārabhūmi* it is shown as follows: Relying on the eye, making external forms manifest, and then knowing. What is experienced by the eye is the meaning of seeing, it is also shown because consciousness relies on the eye.
