It is also said to be completely cut off. Conceptualization and analysis arise by focusing on the four types of objects. The four types of objects are seeing, etc. In the Sutra Unraveling the Profound Meaning, it says that terms are cut off, but it does not say the four types of objects. This indicates that ultimate reality is separate from names, etc., and therefore cannot be indicated by the four types of objects of experience such as seeing. Why is that? Because seeing and hearing, as well as discrimination and cognition, are tainted and bound by elaborations. The nature of ultimate truth is not an object of experience because it is not grasped by seeing, etc. Therefore, ultimate reality cannot be indicated by objects such as seeing. If asked, what is the difference between terms and what is to be indicated? It is said that terms are not what is to be expressed, and seeing, etc., are not objects to be indicated. Therefore, they are different. The detailed explanations of seeing, hearing, discrimination, and cognition are as they appear in the chapter on characteristics. The explanations of seeing, hearing, discrimination, and cognition also differ from each other. The treatises of the Sarvastivada school explain them in conjunction with the six faculties, that is, the faculty of the eye is seeing, the faculty of the ear is hearing, the number of the three faculties is discrimination, and the faculty of the mind is cognition. Therefore, in the chapter on the defilements of the mind, it says: After the eye, seeing arises. After the ear realm, hearing arises. After the three realms, discrimination arises. After the mind realm, cognition arises. This is what is said. Among them, the arising after the six faculties is also understood in this way: The faculties such as the eye are summarized because of the similarity of the arising of consciousness after the faculty. Because it relies on similar faculties, it manifests as having the nature of lordship, etc. Therefore, what arises subsequently is said to be seeing, etc. The Treasury of Knowledge also explains this in a similar way. Therefore,

So, what is the nature of seeing from that very thing? From the verse it says: Eye and ear and mind, as well as other consciousnesses, These in order, seeing, hearing, distinguishing consciousness. Thus it is said, and extensively as it is said in that very thing. Furthermore, in the Great Commentary on Distinctions, it says: That which is experienced by eye consciousness is seeing. That which is experienced by ear consciousness is hearing. That which is experienced by the three consciousnesses is distinguishing. That which is experienced by mind consciousness is consciousness. In order to show the four kinds of objects, seeing, hearing, distinguishing, and consciousness are faculties, not consciousnesses. The mention of consciousness is also to show that the faculties of the eye, etc., must have consciousness as a companion in order to be able to grasp objects, because in this way, similar faculties have the ability to act, but dissimilar ones do not. Why are the three faculties of eye, ear, and mind each established separately? In the Treatise on the Exposition of Various Minds, it says: Because one wishes to combine with these three realms, to obtain freedom from desire and the practice of yoga, as well as supernormal powers and the fruits of the four dhyanas and the five dhyanas, therefore their subsequent births are established separately, while the subsequent births of the other three are established as one because they do not have the characteristics of their nature, as explained extensively in the Great Commentary on Distinctions. Why are the three faculties of nose, etc., combined into one and called distinguishing? It is said: In the verse of the Treatise on the Exposition of Various Minds: Not showing the object, the distinguishing mind enters there, Subsequently three consciousnesses arise, therefore it is called distinguishing. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in the Treatise on the Treasury, it says that the three of smell, taste, and touch are of the nature of not showing, like being dead.

Because there is no knowledge, the Abhisamayalankara (manifest realization) establish the name of discrimination separately. Sixth, even if the consciousness of the mind faculty does not arise, it is accomplished as the same aspect, and it truly becomes knowledge. If it is not so, then the last memory consciousness of the Arhat will not be established, so it is shown. Furthermore, in the treatise "Displaying Various Minds," it also says, "The consciousness that arises following the mind realm," which is said to arise temporarily because it is intended to show the faculty together with consciousness. The Sutra masters explain it in three ways. If it is combined with the treatise that establishes the reality itself, then based on the three valid cognitions, etc., it distinguishes seeing, etc. Therefore, in the chapter on showing the eight terms of that very thing, it says, what is the difference between seeing, hearing, distinguishing, and consciousness? It is said that there are three differences: what is believed in seeing is direct perception; what is believed in hearing is the words of the noble ones; consciousness is the knowledge of inference; discrimination is conceptualization. These three kinds of wisdom of belief sometimes become true, and sometimes they become inverted. It should be understood in detail as explained in that very text. Among them, whatever is seen or heard by the six aggregates of consciousness is direct perception. Therefore, when someone says, "Who sees?" what is believed is called the belief of direct perception. Knowledge that does not rely on an object but relies on scripture is called hearing. Therefore, when someone says, "I heard," what is believed is called belief in the words of the noble ones. For those objects that have not been seen or heard, the knowledge that arises from inferring based on previous seeing and hearing is called inferential knowledge. The mind that repeatedly conceptualizes after the previous three minds is discrimination.
