arose. By truly realizing that all phenomena are without self, one can also completely eradicate them from the root. As it is said in the Sutra on the Complete Purification of Karmic Obscurations: A certain bhikshu committed the two defeats of engaging in impure conduct and killing. Later, tormented by a mind of regret, his heart burned, and like a madman, he went from temple to temple, from village to village, and to various places, eliminating sins in front of many people, saying, "Haha, I stole! I stole!" By the power of repeatedly confessing sins in this way, he abandoned them, and as long as that karma remained, he remained in a state of making it smaller. Merely because of that reason, his mind was tormented, and other than that, a Bodhisattva endowed with clairvoyance taught the profound Dharma in the same way. Therefore, all of his sins were completely purified, and he truly realized the selflessness of phenomena, and he obtained forbearance of the unborn Dharma. Confessions that eliminate all downfalls purify all karmic obscurations. Therefore, one should have faith and devotion in this profound Dharma. As it is extensively taught in the Noble Tathagatagarbha Sutra: Kashyapa, even killing a fully ordained bhikshu, even a pratyekabuddha, is the heaviest among killings. Among taking what is not given, the heaviest is stealing the property of the Three Jewels. Among impure conduct, the heaviest is engaging in conduct with a woman who is both a mother and an arhatni. Among false speech, the heaviest is slandering the Tathagata. Among divisive speech, the heaviest is causing dissension in the Sangha. Among harsh speech, the heaviest is speaking evil words to the noble ones. Among idle chatter, the heaviest is distracting those who desire the Dharma. Among covetousness, the heaviest is coveting the gains of those who have rightly entered the path. Among harmful intent, the heaviest is the mind of committing the five heinous crimes. Among wrong views, the heaviest is extremely dense wrong views. Thus, all these ten paths of unwholesome actions are accompanied by great faults. Kashyapa.

If there are a hundred sentient beings who, in the course of their lives, are endowed with the ten paths of non-virtuous actions, possessing such great faults, then even they can be liberated by the Tathagata through teaching the Dharma that is perfectly in accordance with causes and conditions. Because there is no 'I', no sentient being, no life, no person, no agent, and no experiencer in it, having remembered and directly perceived this, the nature of Dharma, which is without afflictions and like an illusion, will naturally become clear for all phenomena. For all phenomena that are completely pure from the beginning, I say that sentient beings who have faith and joy will not fall into the lower realms. Why is that? Because the aggregates of afflictions have no substance; all afflictions arise and cease. That which arises from the combination of assembled causes and conditions also ceases at the very moment of its arising. Whatever mind arises and ceases, that is also when afflictions cease. If someone believes in this way, then there is no place for falling or not falling. In a place where there is no place, no opportunity, and no obscuration, it is impossible for falling to exist. Similarly, generating the mind of enlightenment itself will completely eliminate all downfalls caused by non-virtue. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Upali: "If a Bodhisattva commits a downfall in the morning, then at noon, the mind of enlightenment should be manifested. In this way, the aggregate of morality of that Bodhisattva should be understood as not being reversed. If a downfall occurs at noon, then in the afternoon, the mind of enlightenment should be manifested. In this way, the aggregate of morality of that Bodhisattva should be understood as not being reversed," and so on. As it is said in the Avatamsaka Sutra: "Son of good family, the mind of enlightenment is like the fire of a great kalpa, which burns all misdeeds," and so on. It is also said in the Three Hundred Verses: "If any son of good family or daughter of good family accepts and holds this sutra in this way...
