Having accomplished the deeds, he placed sentient beings in nirvana by the three vehicles. He himself also completely passed into nirvana at the end of that day. After he had completely passed into nirvana, the sacred Dharma remained for a long time. As for what is called the "final five hundred," five hundred collected together is five hundred. It is said that the Blessed One said that the time the sacred Dharma remains is five thousand years. If the five thousand years are divided into separate five hundreds, they become ten five hundreds, so they become ten periods. Briefly, the first is the time of realization, then the time of practice, then the time called the time of scripture, so there are three times. Among them, the time of realization is also divided into three: the time of the Arhat, the time of the Non-Returner, and the time of the Stream-Enterer. The time of practice is also divided into three aspects: the time of higher vision, the time of samadhi, and the time of morality. The time of scripture is also divided into three: the time of the Abhidharma Pitaka, the time of the Sutra Pitaka, and the time of the Vinaya Pitaka. Thus, there are nine periods, and with the time of merely holding the signs, there are ten periods. In each of these periods, there are five hundred years, so in ten periods, there are ten five hundreds, so there are five thousand years. Of these, the first five hundred is the Arhat, the second is the Non-Returner, the third is the Stream-Enterer, the fourth is the Higher Vision, the fifth is the Samadhi, the sixth is the Morality, the seventh is the Abhidharma, the eighth is the Sutra, the ninth is the Vinaya, and the tenth five hundred is merely the signs. Such is called the final five hundred. Some other sayings call five hundred the abandonment of the long. Others say this: people's lifespan is one hundred years. Of these, in the first fifty years, color, form, strength, wisdom, etc. increase, and in the latter half of fifty, they gradually decrease. Likewise, the time of all the worlds

When the Dharma declines, it is like the sun setting, past noon, and the sun is setting in the west. When the Dharma declines, there will be no realization. Even if it exists, it will not be true realization. For the Sutra Pitaka, asking, teaching others to ask, reading, reciting, etc., will be disturbed by afflictions and bad friends, and people in the world will not be able to enter the right path. At that time of decline, many monks who are attached to appearances will appear, and they will be attached to the five aggregates, etc., thinking that this is realization. They do not like such sutras because their views are reversed. They will not believe it either, because they are not accustomed to the profound Dharma. Not only do they not believe it, but they also abandon, accuse, and slander it. For such sutras that expound profound meanings and have guidance, and for the monks who hold the sutras, they will harm them and even kill them. Many people will be greedy for gain and respect. At that time, a king named "Power of Wisdom" will appear, he is the ruler of Jambudvipa, a wheel-turning king with power, and he will completely protect the Dharma. In addition, there is a monk named "Righteous Good Wisdom", who holds this samadhi, is a speaker of Dharma, and becomes the king's spiritual friend. He enters the palace, hoping to benefit the king, and the king is also good at watching, listening to the Dharma, and offering respectful offerings. That Dharma-speaking monk, etc., are all describing the merits of the Dharma-speaker. They are proficient in the behavior, habits, beliefs, nature, and karmic imprints of sentient beings, etc. Among them, behavior refers to entering a certain behavior; habits refer to entering acts of generosity, etc.; belief refers to the path of the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Samyaksambuddhas, cultivating the mind of realization; nature refers to karmic imprints; karmic imprints refer to self-nature. Being proficient in these means being able to definitively understand these meanings. The foundation refers to faith, etc.
