And the practitioner, with the nature of following and opposing, the mind follows the aspects of happiness and suffering, etc., acknowledging that I am that. If there is no oneness, then what is done will be in vain, and one will encounter what has not been done. If the person is eternally one, then the agent does not abandon his own nature, and the practitioner will decline. This is their statement. To this, the youth Mālin says: Therefore, having abandoned both, the person with the nature of opposition and following should be acknowledged, like the transformations of illusion, etc. This is what he said. The agent and the practitioner themselves depend on the self, not on the state. Knowing that he is the agent and the practitioner himself, one can distinguish with strength. If I appear, then the aspects of the constant past, future, and present appear, because they are my objects, so I have knowledge. I will know. I know, like this, determining one or two objects, if someone says this, then for the Brahmins who are proficient in epistemology, this is possible. Furthermore, perception is the nature of both, it is the complete knowledge of objects that pervade the times of past and future, etc. Therefore, it will be shown in this way: the past refers to what has passed, the future refers to what has not yet come. If it is said that perception completely knows these, then it will be harmed by the root of the Sutra that exists and is completely combined, namely, "Because the future is unseen, there is no perception." Like this, because of intervening by connecting the objects of past and future, etc., the efforts made by the disputant will be fruitless. Therefore, it must be determined that perception only grasps the object that is happening now. In this way, through the nature of only what is happening now, separated from the previous and the later, it should be known that I can know myself. Therefore, if one acknowledges that it is only consciousness, and that it is the self-knowing moment separated from following the previous and the later, then I am merely postulating another form of name.

If it is said that subsequent inference establishes the self as permanent, then, even so, is it direct perception that precedes, or is it subsequent inference that precedes? If subsequent inference precedes, then it will become endless. Without first entering direct perception, how can one enter subsequent inference? Furthermore, even if the self is established by the power of self-conceit, it is with the body as the object that one says, "I am thin," "I am hungry," "red and yellow," etc., speaking from a general perspective. I am not speaking from the perspective of my generality. Therefore, it will be said that, with the body, which is the nature of the eyes, etc., as the object, it is understood as "I." There is no contradiction to this, because it is merely a name, and the agent, etc., are also merely the nature of the cause and effect of momentary consciousness, and there is nothing else besides that. The argument that "doing small things and eating big things, and encountering what has not been done" is also not an argument. Therefore, the self examined by the practitioner is merely a designation. The naked ascetics say that by entering through direct perception itself, and by knowing the nature of the opposite, one approaches the self. Even so, there are distinctions made by the differences in states such as happiness and suffering, but whatever the state, it approaches the nature of knowing in all states, and that is also real. The terms are also gradually familiarized, and there are differences in the states of happiness and suffering, and that is also established by direct perception. Even so, if there is no difference in place, time, and nature, then there is no difference between the dharma and the possessor of dharma. There is a difference by the difference of number, name, characteristic, and result, just as with a pot and form, etc. The pot and its form, etc., and place, etc., are different. Whatever the place, the place of the pot, the time, and the nature are the form, etc. By number, etc., there is a difference in the form, etc., of the pot. That is, the pot is one, and the form, etc., are many, which is the difference in number. Bracelets, earrings, anklets, and wooden bowls, etc.
