If it is said that there is no self, no entity, and it is unborn, then how can terms such as birth be justified? The answer is: it is merely a completely imputed, untrue imputation. All things arise merely as imputed. Therefore, it is said: Like mirages and water. This means that there is no water in mirages. Similarly, all phenomena such as form are of the nature of non-entity. Like illusion and emanation, and like the fragrance of flowers in the sky. Like lightning and clouds, they are moving and empty. If they are examined as they are, they are also moving, of the momentary nature like lightning, and empty because of the nature of being incompletely formed like clouds. In order to show that by demonstrating the absence of self in a person, the absence of birth is established, it will also be established that there is no self in phenomena. It is said: No self, no sentient beings, no life. This means that all phenomena are without self, without sentient beings, and without life. What is this like? Just as the self and so on have become substantial, such as the Lokayata, Vaisheshika, Samkhya, and so on, up to the Digambara, they affirm and establish the non-existent self and so on, therefore they defeat the logicians. Among them, the logician said: If there is no self, then karma and its results, as well as the establishment of the agent and the enjoyer, cannot be found. If there is no single agent, then what has been done will be wasted, and what has not been done will be encountered. They will state the valid cognitions that establish their existence, permanence, pervasiveness, agency, and enjoyership. Existence, for the time being, is the establishment of a valid cognition that is well-endowed, which is to make the distinctions of the six, such as existence, into objects, and non-objects, such as direct perception, inference, approximation, scripture, memory, self-awareness, established views, established consciousness, doubt, perversion, non-discrimination, and dreams within dreams, these are the distinctions of the self's consciousness, different from the body.

Present knowledge becomes knowledge because it is a birth arising from its own cause, just like the knowledge of other people. Dissimilar dharmas are like broken vases, etc. There are six distinctions, such as existence, namely, existence, impermanence, having substance, effect, cause, and general distinction. The objects of these six are substance, quality, and action, which become objects. What does not become an object is generality, particularity, and aggregation. Both of these are knowable, that is, objects. Those that are direct perception, etc., are called that. The established view is related to the treatise of calculation, because it is the view of the established ones, or it is the view that establishes, therefore it is called the established view. Arrogant knowledge is called established knowledge, such as saying that my brother will come tomorrow. Or because it is the knowledge of the sages, it is called established knowledge. Hesitation is doubt. Inversion is becoming inverted. A dream is a dream caused by the condition of the initial dream state. A dream within a dream is when another dream occurs within a dream. These were taught by Vimalakirti to create wonder in women and the common people. Establishing validity by the manifest is that Devadatta, because I believe, combines diligently, that is, the cause of form, taste, smell, and touch is the same, and the cause of various objects with many characteristics, on which the single characteristic that combines diligently with one characteristic, that is the self. The word "self" is the object that is different from the collection of body, senses, mind, intelligence, and feelings, etc., because the sound is the same, so it is like a vase. Similarly, this body with life is not without self, because it would become separated from life, etc., so it is like a vase. Having thus spoken of the validity of the assertion of existence, Vimalakirti, because he did not speak of the validity of permanence and pervasiveness, said, the knowledge of the object of cognition that I first arose from my mother's womb is the same as the knowledge of the object of cognition in the later final time.
