I will explain in order. Ārakṣita, it is like this: For example, giving medicine suitable for a king to a sick person, but not doing it according to the ritual, leading to death, similarly, those who are learned view (learning) as a disease of afflictions, and those who do not guard their vows will lead to death. This metaphor is the first. Ārakṣita, it is like this: For example, a precious jewel falling into something unclean will be degraded, similarly, those who are learned, if they fall into the uncleanness of gain and respect, will also be degraded. When there is nothing, gods and humans will be happy. This metaphor of the precious jewel is the second. Ārakṣita, it is like this: For example, putting a gold necklace on a corpse, (Such a person) looks like a person of bad character wearing a shroud. This metaphor of the corpse is the third. Ārakṣita, it is like this: For example, a merchant's son bathes very cleanly, is thoroughly perfumed, has his hair and nails cut, wears white clothes, is anointed with the best sandalwood, and wears a garland of champaka flowers on his head, similarly, a person who is disciplined and learned, (but) looks like he is wearing a shroud. This is also the third metaphor. Because pride arises based on discipline, four types of people who resemble those with discipline are taught. Ārakṣita, these four types of people are those of bad character who pretend to have discipline, which four? and so on. The first is the discipline that is properly taken up. Ārakṣita, here there is a monk who has discipline, who binds himself with the vows of individual liberation and abides in them, who is complete with rituals and conduct, who sees small faults as fearful, who properly takes up and learns the objects of learning, whose actions of body, speech, and mind are pure, who lives by a pure livelihood, but who considers himself (to have merit), Ārakṣita, this is a person of bad character who pretends to have discipline, therefore it is said to be the discipline that is properly taken up. The second is, Ārakṣita, also, here some monks hold the Vinaya, enter the Vinaya, abide in the conduct of the Vinaya, but have not been liberated from the view of the aggregates, this is a person of bad character.

Therefore, as it is said, the second is the discipline of conduct. The third is, O Sustainer of Light, some monks abide in loving-kindness, and although they possess loving-kindness focused on sentient beings, they become terrified and utterly terrified when they hear that all phenomena are unborn. This is called the Sustainer of Light and the one who possesses discipline with bad conduct. Because they abide in loving-kindness, they destroy discordant factors and bad conduct, therefore it is the discipline of destroying discordant factors. The fourth is, O Sustainer of Light, some monks, although they have perfectly taken up the twelve qualities of purification, still cling to objects. Those who cling to fame and gain and abide in self-grasping are the fourth kind of discipline with bad conduct. O Sustainer of Light, these four are similar to those who possess discipline with bad conduct. The so-called perfectly taking up the twelve qualities of purification is the discipline of reducing possessions. Among them, the first two destroy the antidote to bad conduct due to the fault of views, and because they possess the cause of bad conduct, they should be recognized as those with bad conduct. As it is said, this is because they say there is a self, and they have not moved away from the view of the aggregates, therefore they should be understood in order. The latter two are not different from bad conduct, because if all phenomena are absent from one dharma, they will be terrified when they hear it, as previously said, because they are afraid of nirvana, they do not cultivate the antidote to destroy bad conduct. The second is because, as it is said, they cling to objects. Those with manifest pride, thinking they are liberated, cling to the self, and to counteract that, they teach with the discipline of true meaning, which is to completely separate by abandonment and to completely separate by the path. This first discipline is an internal source, not an external one. O Sustainer of Light, the so-called discipline, discipline, is that which is without self and without what belongs to self. The second, which is without action, is the karma of afflictions. Non-inaction is virtuous karma. Non-actor is one who does not perform the karma of afflictions in any way, such as with the body. Non-actor is one who does virtue
