With pride, it is due to clinging to distorted appearances. Because of the four dharmas such as not listening, the accumulation of wisdom is completely diminished. Therefore, in this life and other lives, other four dharmas that are contrary to wisdom will arise. What are the four? They are not becoming virtuous, not having favorable conditions, becoming foolish, thereby generating non-merit and reversal. Relying on not listening, one will not become virtuous in this life. Relying on not speaking, one will not have favorable conditions in future lives. Relying on obstacles to listening, one will become foolish in future lives, thereby generating non-merit. Relying on speaking with clinging to distorted appearances, one will become distorted in future lives. What is the difference between the two words, disrespecting the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma? The answer is: the two words completely show the reason for not listening. Some people think that the Dharma is harmful, so they do not listen, but they listen with respect to the speaker of the Dharma. Some people think that the speaker of the Dharma is harmful, so they do not listen, but they listen with respect to the Dharma. If one thinks that both are harmful, then one will not listen. Therefore, these two expressions completely reveal the reason for not listening. What is the difference between the two words, being stingy with the Dharma and the teacher hiding the Dharma? The answer is: because one shows one's superiority over others, one is stingy with the Dharma. Because of fear of others' contempt, the teacher hides the Dharma. Or, without any difference, not speaking all the Dharma, therefore being stingy with the Dharma. Speaking some, not speaking some, therefore the teacher hides the Dharma. In fact, it is being stingy with the Dharma, and because the Dharma is not completely given, the thoughts become perverse. The teacher hiding the Dharma is the perverse action arising from the thought of being stingy with the Dharma. For those who want the Dharma, creating obstacles to the Dharma, hindering their wishes, making them upset, not speaking and hiding extremely, what is the difference between these words? To this, creating obstacles to the Dharma is a word of teaching. How to create obstacles to the Dharma?

It causes the loss of faith. It causes mental distraction. It does not explain and conceals extremely. How does it cause the loss of faith? Because of speaking unpleasant things about the Dharma and the individual. Regarding the Dharma and the individual, from where one desires to hear that Dharma, and regarding that individual, with words that possess non-existent harm, no matter what, one will not listen. Like that, one speaks unpleasant things. How does it cause mental distraction? By causing mental distraction through bad actions. No matter what, one will not listen. Like that, one causes mental distraction to the listener through bad actions. How does one not explain? Not explaining, not imparting, not declaring. When other seekers of Dharma ask, saying, 'Please speak the Dharma!' one does not explain due to stinginess towards the Dharma. One does not impart to other speakers of the Dharma, and even if asked, one does not elucidate. How does one conceal extremely? By speaking of non-praise of the listener, saying, 'This Dharma is profound, and you are of weak intelligence, so you cannot understand this Dharma.' Like that, by speaking of the listener's unpleasantness, one conceals the teaching of the Dharma extremely. Like that, by creating obstacles to the Dharma, one is born in an unfree place, and one cannot perfect the Sangha. What is the meaning of those words, 'Through pride, one praises oneself and disparages others'? Pride is a term of the teachings. How is it pride? Whatever praises oneself and disparages others. How is it praising oneself? Regarding wrong understanding, meditation, and explanation, one is attached to appearing as good understanding, meditation, and explanation. How is it disparaging others? Regarding others' good understanding, meditation, and explanation, one is attached to appearing as wrong understanding, meditation, and explanation. Due to the fault of pride, one does not obtain the wisdom that is gathered by the wisdom of manifesting complete enlightenment and going to the ultimate realization of the Dharma. In short, from where one completely falls away, and how, and when, and by how many Dharmas one completely falls away, these are all completely shown. From where does one completely fall away? From wisdom.

What is called wrong view, by what means is it completely lost? As previously stated. When is it lost? In this life and in future lives. By how many dharmas is it lost? By the four dharmas such as disrespect. To counteract the four dharmas such as disrespect, which cause the complete loss of wisdom and become unfavorable factors, four antidotal dharmas are taught. Manjushri, these four dharmas are the cause of the great wisdom of a Bodhisattva. What are the four? They are respect for the Dharma and the teachers of the Dharma, and so on. By properly taking hold of the cause of these four dharmas such as respect, one can obtain four kinds of wisdom, which become the cause of the great wisdom of a Bodhisattva, namely, purification, maturation, completion of accumulations, and the realization of perfect enlightenment. By listening to the Dharma with respect, one can obtain the wisdom of purification. By extensively and truthfully explaining to others the dharmas that have been heard and understood, one can broadly mature the minds of oneself and others. Knowing that wisdom arises from extensive learning, one should seek extensive learning as if one's head or skull were on fire, and also uphold the dharmas that have been heard. By seeking and upholding extensive learning, one can complete the accumulations. Taking practice as the essence, rather than clinging to the words of speech and expression, that is, by taking practice as the essence, one can obtain the wisdom of realizing perfect enlightenment. Among them, the so-called respect for the Dharma and the teachers of the Dharma is the opposite of disrespect, and should be understood as respect. The dharmas that have been heard and understood should also be extensively and truthfully explained to others. Not being jealous of gain, respect, and praise with a defiled mind, that is, treating all gain and respect with an undefiled mind, because gain and respect are the cause of stinginess towards the Dharma. Gain refers to Dharma robes and so on. Respect refers to prostrations and so on. Praise refers to singing praises. Extensive learning...
