In the wilderness, they do not diligently engage in individual contemplation. They do not know or understand how these (people) do not arise from form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Because they do not know or understand, even if they go to villages, cities, cold places, the surroundings of places, or the surroundings of the king's palace, they will be distracted by form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. If they go to a monastery but it becomes the time of death, those who abide in worldly discipline will be born in the higher realms, where they will also be distracted by the five qualities of heavenly desire. After dying and transmigrating from there, they will not be completely liberated from the four lower realms, namely, hell beings, animals, the realm of Yama, and asuras. Like this, even if scolded, they do not scold back; from anger, they do not generate anger again; even if beaten, they do not strike back; even if faults are exposed, they do not expose faults in return. Regarding the scolding, beating, or exposing of faults, they contemplate with certainty in their minds and think individually. This also shows the opposing side that is to be shown as an antidote. This is like a dog chasing a stone. O Light Protector, how is it that a monk is not like a dog chasing a stone? That is, no matter how scolded, they do not scold back; even if angry, they do not generate anger again; even if beaten, they do not strike back; even if faults are exposed, they do not expose faults in return. Regarding what is scolding, anger, beating, or exposing faults, they contemplate with certainty in their minds and think individually. This means that if they go to a monastery and appearances such as attractive forms arise, they do not leave these unattended, and because they possess the yoga of individual contemplation in their minds, they know how they arise from form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. In this way, they will not be distracted by these, and they will be liberated from them. By showing the opposing side, the meaning of the antidote is also shown. In this way, they are not like a dog chasing a stone. Thus, in order to subdue attachment and discomfort, one engages in the training of higher discipline. O Light Protector, for example, like taming a horse...

Just as a skilled trainer knows where a horse is running and trains it where it is not yet trained, so too, O Bright Youth, a yogi bhikkhu sees where the mind wanders and applies himself to taming it there, making sure that it does not become disturbed later. The example of the skilled trainer is to apply oneself to the higher training of the mind by taking disgust to heart. O Bright Youth, just as a hidden disease can damage the life force, so too, among all views, clinging to self damages the life force of the Dharma, this is the example of a hidden disease. O Bright Youth, just as a person who is bound in any place should be freed from that place, so too, O Bright Youth, one should be freed from whatever the mind is attached to. The example of a bound person is to apply oneself to the higher training of wisdom through the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena. If it is said that taming attachment and displeasure is to apply oneself to the higher training of the mind, then why is it said in this sutra that one should apply oneself to the higher training of discipline? Because attachment and displeasure are the cause of arising faults, and faults mostly arise from desire and hatred. Therefore, taming attachment and displeasure is said to be applying oneself to the training of higher discipline. How do faults arise from attachment and displeasure? There are two ways: how not to eliminate them, and how to bestow them. How not to eliminate them? For example, some shramanas and brahmins do not fully understand the root of affliction, and because they are afraid of objects such as form, they dwell in solitary places. Because they do not properly attend to their own minds, the attachment and displeasure that arise, and also regard themselves with pride in objects and other things, are therefore connected with attachment and so on. Just as a dog chases after a stone that has been thrown, they do not eliminate attachment and other minds. If they associate with villages and so on, then
