Like finding a great treasure of Dharma, etc., these four should be known. The four worldly things are the enjoyment of seeing, such as dancing, etc.; the enjoyment of hearing, such as singing, etc.; the enjoyment of remembering, such as warehouses and treasuries, etc.; and the enjoyment of touching, such as eating and wearing, etc. Therefore, one should know seeing the Buddha, hearing the Buddha, thinking of the Buddha, and meditating on the Buddha. These four dharmas that greatly transcend the maras should be known as the four dharmas that greatly transcend the maras by controlling the four maras. The four maras are: cutting off the bodhicitta that connects to the Great Vehicle; cutting off the connection that ripens sentient beings, which is generating anger towards all sentient beings; cutting off the connection without error, which is not discriminating against all that is seen; and cutting off complete discrimination, which is having strong pride towards all sentient beings. The opposite of this is not retreating from the Great Vehicle itself, completely abandoning the peace that does not benefit all sentient beings, thoroughly abandoning the basis of evil practice, and completely abandoning the basis of correct practice that cannot be perfectly accomplished, thereby knowing it as greatly transcending the maras. These four dharmas are said to be the accumulation of all the roots of virtue of a Bodhisattva, which is through the four ways of virtue, knowing that these four dharmas can accumulate virtuous dharmas. When in a state of equipoise, following meditation; when in a state of non-equipoise, there are three ways: following the ripening of sentient beings, following difficult practices, and following hearing and thinking. Residing in a solitary place without pretense and meditating, this shows the virtue of following meditation. Engaging in ripening sentient beings without expecting a return, this is following the ripening of sentient beings. Giving away body and life to all sentient beings and diligently seeking the excellent Dharma, this is following difficult practices. Not being satisfied with hearing and meaning.

Practicing, with diligence in truly gathering all the root dharmas of virtue, is to follow hearing and thinking. The accumulations of merit of a Bodhisattva are immeasurable, fourfold. What are the four? It is called the fourfold because sentient beings are empowered to be completely subdued from four places. From which four are they liberated? From stinginess and hesitation, doubt, and falling into bad realms and bad paths, as well as devotion to the Lesser Vehicle, and from thinking of harming the teachings and anger. Among these, by giving the Dharma with a mind free from defilement, one is turned away from stinginess, hesitation, and doubt. By having great compassion for all evil ways, one is turned away from falling into bad realms, bad paths. By showing the mind of enlightenment to all sentient beings, one is turned away from devotion to the Lesser Vehicle. By relying on patience towards the weak, one is turned away from thinking of harming the teachings and anger, and not protecting the weak causes anger towards the teachings. Light Protector! One should not be called a Bodhisattva merely by the name of a Bodhisattva, this is to show the various distinctions of truly practicing, therefore, the connecting text of the sutras is composed. Mentioning Dharma practice and so on, is to show the distinction, non-distinction, belonging, and method. Dharma practice starts from the Shravakas and so on. The conduct of a Bodhisattva is particularly shown. By practicing equally, that is, by the nature of equality between self and others, the non-distinction of the Bodhisattva's conduct is shown to all sentient beings. By cultivating virtue, the belonging of the Bodhisattva's conduct is shown, because virtue is extremely pure and complete, ultimately belonging to the accomplishment of Buddhahood. By abiding in the Dharma, the method of this Bodhisattva's conduct is shown. Among these, the Bodhisattva's Dharma practice surpasses the Shravakas and so on with five kinds of distinctions, that is, having the thought of benefiting and bringing happiness to all sentient beings, this is the distinction of intention. A Bodhisattva with a pure intention, like treating oneself, has the thought of benefiting and bringing happiness to all sentient beings, but the Shravakas and so on are not like that. The distinction of application is fourfold.
