It is not. A Bodhisattva who practices in that way, whether holding the Dharma, residing in a monastery, engaging in meritorious deeds, or being with retinue, makes oneself bad. As an antidote to this, one should understand the true qualities of a Bodhisattva. These four light protectors are the true qualities of a Bodhisattva. What are the four? This is the extensively spoken content. Among them, regarding emptiness, it is not to be obtained through faith and to desire reverence. Regarding the ripening of karma, by believing, one strives for the sake of the Dharma, for the sake of the cause of the Dharma, to increase merit, etc. Regarding selflessness, with patience, one desires the verses of speech. With compassion, a Bodhisattva desires qualities. With intention entering Nirvana, one does not desire one's own happiness. With action entering Samsara, one does not desire to eliminate the suffering of sentient beings. In making sentient beings fully ripen, with the giving of sight, one does not desire the gathering of retinue. Not expecting the result of maturation, but desiring solitude. On the side of the white, starting from the Dharma of faith in emptiness, etc., what is the need? It is said: The accumulation of paths such as giving is common to Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, thinking of those who are happy to hear the differences of the Bodhisattva path, in order to proclaim the Dharma of the Bodhisattva, which is not common to Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, which can attain Buddhahood, therefore the Bhagavan said four. Question: Why only four? Not many, not few. Answer: Some say that too many would become a fault, so there would be no dispute. Also, in order to show the cause of the wonderful Dharma, there are four. Because of practicing emptiness for a long time, one attains omniscience, because the cause of practicing emptiness is similar, in order to subdue the ignorance of ignorant beings, one will be respectful when teaching the Dharma. Without pride, because of practicing selflessness, in order to subdue the pride of proud beings, one will be respectful when teaching the Dharma. Intention Nirvana, extremely peaceful, because of practice, it makes unpeaceful beings tend to peace.

To respectfully teach the Dharma. Because of diligently cultivating the Dharma that counteracts miserliness and material giving, in order to destroy the habit of beings who are fond of taking, therefore, one respectfully teaches the Dharma. Or, in order to gather all the retinues of Bodhisattvas, there are four types. In short, there are two types of Bodhisattva retinues: the accumulation of wisdom and the accumulation of merit. Thus, faith in emptiness and selflessness, and the intention to renounce samsara, are the accumulation of wisdom. Trusting in the ripening of karma and other remaining words are the accumulation of merit. There are four ways to gather accumulations with the six paramitas. Among them, observing the ripening of all sentient beings, and the Dharma of not expecting different results, and material giving, are the accumulation of the giving paramita. The intention to renounce samsara is the accumulation of the discipline paramita. A Bodhisattva with the intention to renounce samsara, being weary of samsara, eliminates the cause of bad habits—afflictions—with the discipline of self-nature, thereby obtaining the excellent Dharma of the seed. Faith in the patience of selflessness is the accumulation of the patience paramita. A Bodhisattva with the patience of selflessness, in order to eliminate the afflictions of the place where sentient beings are perceived as sentient beings, will not be disturbed by the faults of sentient beings. Trusting in the ripening of karma, and the practice of going to samsara, is the accumulation of the diligence paramita. A Bodhisattva who trusts in the result of the accumulation of merit and wisdom—omniscience—observes and teaches sentient beings who are oppressed by the endless suffering of samsara, and is not afraid of the suffering of samsara, and practices in samsara, and initiates great diligence in order to increase the roots of virtue. Great compassion is the accumulation of the meditation paramita, because great compassion belongs to the root meditation. Faith in emptiness is the accumulation of the prajna paramita. The Bodhi who does not abandon the mind of Bodhi
