Not being inclined to work for one's own benefit, but abiding to work for the benefit of sentient beings, this prevents (our) interest. When abiding to work for the benefit of sentient beings, and at the time of the cause of complete degeneration, one should recognize (this as) a bad friend. Those who have the courage of various worldly gossips prevent (our) interest in the Dharma. When at the time of the cause of complete degeneration from the Dharma, one should recognize (this as) a bad Dharma friend. For those who gather worldly clutter through the Dharma, but do not gather all the Dharmas, it can be considered that they have lost the ability to continuously practice virtue. When at the time of the cause of complete degeneration of virtue, one should recognize (this as) a bad Dharma friend. One should recognize that its antidote is the bright side. These four dharmas spoken by Maitreya Bodhisattva are the spiritual friends of Bodhisattvas. What are the four? (The sutra) has extensive explanations. Now, in order to show the path to enlightenment, the Bodhisattva spiritual friend who exhorts (others) is considered a spiritual friend because he exhorts (others) to counteract falling away from the Mahayana. Here, the Bodhisattva thinks: Relying on exhortation, I have done much merit, but the dedication made for enlightenment may become meaningless. Therefore, they do not want (me) to enter the Hinayana. Giving is an indication of the path to enlightenment, and by doing good deeds, (we) will not completely fall away from the Mahayana. In order to show the wisdom of hearing, the Dharma speaker, the Bodhisattva's spiritual friend, is to counteract falling away from abiding. Through extensive hearing, they wish to teach the Dharma to others. Because they abide and rely on not small interest. By relying on the wisdom of hearing, (we) will not completely fall away from the fear of samsara. In order to show all the roots of virtue, the Bodhisattva spiritual friend who causes (others) to ordain and take vows correctly is to counteract falling away from the Dharma. By causing (others) to ordain and take vows correctly, (we) are far from false teachings. Because all the roots of virtue

Because of stability, one is able to accomplish the benefit of others, and therefore will not completely degenerate. In order to teach all the Buddha's teachings, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are called the virtuous friends of the Bodhisattvas, because they see that from the Buddha they obtain the distinction of meaningful instructions to counteract the complete degeneration of the Buddha's teachings, so it is not to deceive for the sake of defilement. If one deceives for the sake of defilement, then one will completely degenerate from the Buddha's teachings, because the Buddha taught the Dharma, so one will not completely degenerate from many roots of virtue. One should avoid associating with non-holy beings; when associating with holy beings, the Bodhisattva wishes to lead others to understand as it is, therefore the Buddha taught the characteristics of the Bodhisattva as they are. "These four light-holders are the images of the Bodhisattva," the Buddha has widely proclaimed. Someone asked, "Why only four?" Answer: "In terms of the four images of the Bodhisattva, one should know that there are four images of the Bodhisattva: the image of much learning, the image of dwelling in solitude, the image of engaging in meritorious deeds, and the image of gathering the Sangha." The so-called "not desiring gain and respect, nor desiring the Dharma," refers to those who want to hinder the Bodhisattva, even if they claim to be Dharma-holders, but in reality they are not as they are, indeed not as they are. The so-called "liking the meter of speech, but not liking merit," refers to those Bodhisattvas who are greedy for words, even if they are in solitude, but in reality they are not as they are, indeed not as they are. The so-called "desiring their own happiness, but not desiring to eliminate the suffering of sentient beings," refers to those who, with a mind associated with the fruits of defilement, engage in the meritorious deeds of the Bodhisattva, but in reality they are not as they are, indeed not as they are. The so-called "liking the gathering of retinues, but not liking the truth," refers to those who, with a mind separated from service, enjoyment, and speech, dwell with the retinue of the Bodhisattva, but in reality they are not as they are, indeed not as they are.
