In order to tame us, and in order to completely abandon the dharmas that cause wildness, and in order to cause the non-wild to be properly upheld, in order to show the wild and the non-wild dharmas, the Blessed One extensively spoke of these four Light Protectors as wild bodhisattvas. It is said: Why only four? Because they are the causes of the four kinds of wildness. What are the four kinds of wildness? They are wildness in dwelling, wildness in entering, wildness in using, and wildness in associating. Among them, what is called wildness is difficult to tame, like a wild horse. These four dharmas that cause wildness, if practiced by a bodhisattva, will become obstacles, therefore they are called causing wildness. Among them, abiding in the dharma that is distracted by listening is the cause of wildness in dwelling. For example, if a wild horse whose mind is not tamed is placed in its place, it cannot stay. Similarly, a wild bodhisattva is distracted by listening because he holds listening as supreme. Because his mind is not tamed, if virtuous friends cause him to practice the dharma that accords with the Dharma, he cannot stay. Abiding in the dharma that is distracted by following instruction is the cause of wildness in entering. For example, if a wild horse enters a comfortable path, it will become wild and enter an uncomfortable path. Similarly, if a wild bodhisattva is taught and instructed by virtuous friends to practice the dharma that accords with the Dharma, he will understand it perversely and wrongly grasp the key points. Causing what is given with faith to fall wrongly is the cause of wildness in using. For example, if a wild horse is placed among good horses, its use will be different from that of the good horses. Similarly, if a wild bodhisattva enters among good bodhisattvas, he will regret eating what is given with faith because his discipline is flawed. It should be known that his merit is not equal to that of good bodhisattvas. Disrespecting tamed, good bodhisattvas is wildness in association, which is the cause of suffering.

For example, a wild horse, having become wild, suffers when associating with horses that know how to behave. Similarly, a Bodhisattva who is wild and attached to his own views also suffers when associating with Bodhisattvas who are disciplined and wise. And disciplined and wise Bodhisattvas also suffer because of the wild ones. Among these, discipline is due to the exceptional superiority of controlling the senses. The opposite of this should be understood as the white side. These four protectors of light are wise Bodhisattvas. Which four? They are "if" and so on. Having listened to the good teachings, one should diligently apply oneself to them and follow them for the sake of their meaning. Not following them for the sake of the words means criticizing and being indulgent. Arguing in that way is not truly listening to the Dharma. This is a summary statement. A Bodhisattva who practices in this way will not deceive a virtuous friend who upholds the Dharma. Acting in accordance with the teachings, rejoicing in the instructions of the teacher, and striving to accomplish them is to listen to the teacher. What is the meaning of those words? Among them, acting in accordance with the teachings is the summary of the teachings. Rejoicing in the instructions means being able to endure the words. Striving to accomplish them means being without fault at all times. Listening to the teacher means having respect for the instructions. A Bodhisattva who practices in this way will not deceive a virtuous friend in a solitary place. The precepts and samadhi will not decline, and the wise one eats all food, which means that because of great respect for the training, one uses what is given with faith. The precepts and samadhi do not decline, and here one should understand that the precepts themselves are the sound of samadhi. A Bodhisattva who practices in this way will not deceive a virtuous friend who diligently accumulates merit. If one sees disciplined and wise Bodhisattvas, one should have respect. Having respect and relying on them, approaching them, entering into them, and then hoping to receive their qualities. What is the difference between these words? Among them, the meaning of discipline and wisdom has already been explained.
