The term "incompatible" means that there is nothing that arises without depending on causes and conditions; it always depends on causes and conditions, that is its definition. Suchness means meditating only on such. Or, because it is the cause of realizing suchness. The term "unmistaken suchness" is to negate error. The term "non-different suchness" is to abandon falsehood, for if some thing were not dependently arisen, then it would become false. But that is not the case, because all things are dependently arisen. The term "truthfulness" means possessing प्रमाण (pramāṇa, valid cognition), because it is not deceptive. The term "only truth" means belonging to the noble truths. The term "non-erroneousness" means not being examined in a reversed way. The term "non-reversedness" means that it is the object of correct wisdom. Alternatively, the earlier words can be connected with the later words, and the later words can be used to explain the earlier words. "Because of the two," etc., indicates the second characteristic. Relation means arising in dependence on it; by showing the cause of many impermanent things, this eliminates the incompatible cause called "the only permanent." Here, cause means the cause of taking, because it is uncommon. Conditions are considered to be the cause of acting together, because they are common. In order to show the third characteristic, it is said, "It should also be viewed in two aspects, external and internal," where "also" refers to dependent arising related to causes and conditions. Among them, the made things are the internal sense bases.

English

It explains the fourth characteristic of dependent origination, because it states that seeds, etc., are the causes that are determined separately. This cause is shown to be effective by the two ways of following and reversing. Not everything arises from everything, because the functions are determined separately, that is his intention. For the permanent, there is no following or reversing, therefore, those who say that the permanent results from the absence of function are refuted. Among them, the seed does not think, "I will accomplish the sprout," etc., which shows the fifth characteristic. However, etc., it will show that things have causes but no agents. If the agent is the cause, then the thing will become unrelated, because there is no benefit. Even if there is benefit, if it benefits the agent merely by its existence, then why does it not benefit the result in the same way? If the agent is produced by another, then at that time it will also become unrelated to it. If the agent also produces the result merely by its existence because its function is determined separately, then why do things not do the same? If it is said that it is another agent, then the agent will become endless. Therefore, the Buddha's statement that "all dharmas have no agent" is reasonable. Therefore, those who think of the cause as having an agent are refuted. Among them, the earth element does the work of relying on the seed, etc., by showing the combination of earth, etc., because it expresses the function, it shows the fourth characteristic. From this, the earth element itself is seen as the nature of color and shape. The water element is the nature of moisture. The fire element is the nature of heat. The wind element is the nature of movement, which makes the sprout manifest. The space element is the inner space, without touch on top, which is also seen as the nature of light and darkness. Time is also considered to be the difference of time which is divided according to the difference of the state of earth and so on. The earth element also does not think, "I will do the work of relying on the seed."

English

The phrase "O" and so on indicates the fifth characteristic. Thus, by showing the five characteristics, refuting the views of the non-Buddhists through the way of following, and refuting through the way of opposition, therefore it is said "that sprout" and so on. The phrase "I did not do" is to eliminate the view of those who say that nature itself is the cause. Nature itself is not reasonable as a cause from existence and non-existence, because it is meaningless and incapable. The phrase "others did not do" means that any other agent does not do it with prior consideration, as the reason shown, all dharmas have no agent. The phrase "neither did" means that neither I nor others did it. The phrase "Ishvara did not do" is to eliminate the view of those who say that Ishvara is the author, the cause of things, Ishvara and so on are permanent, because they sometimes occur, it is not reasonable, because the cause cannot be incomplete. The permanent does not depend on others, because others do not need to depend on it. If the cause of these causes and conditions is also Ishvara and so on, then it is impossible not to be incomplete. Therefore, considering that it sometimes occurs, it is not done by Ishvara. Time also did not do it. Nor did it arise from the nature examined by the Samkhya school. All these eliminate the incompatible cause. All these phrases eliminate no cause, if there is no cause, then because there is no dependence, it is also unreasonable to sometimes occur. In order to show that these five characteristics of dependent origination eliminate the view of permanence and so on, it is said "observe in five ways", which is a synonym for "five ways". Because cause and effect are very different, it is not the sole nature. Otherwise, this would be the effect, this would be the cause, such a distinction would also not exist. The effect will also not arise from the past and simultaneous cause, but from the present. Because it is momentary, at the time of the arising of the effect, the cause does not remain, so it will not arise from the simultaneous, otherwise it would be too extreme. Therefore, the continuity of cause and effect is not cut off, so it is not annihilation. Cause and effect are not the same, so it is not transformation.
