The Extensive Commentary on the Noble Sālu Tree, by Kamalaśīla. The Extensive Commentary on the Noble Sālu Tree. By Kamalaśīla. In Sanskrit: Ārya Sāli Stamba Sya Tīkā. In Tibetan: The Extensive Commentary on the Noble Sālu Tree. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! By what thing the teaching of dependent arising is shown, Who truly declared what is superior and what is not superior, To that king of Dharma, I pay homage, And will explain the meaning of the Sālu tree to the best of my ability. Desiring to explain the sutra, one should first state the meaning of the summary, the purpose, the meaning of the words, the connection, and the answers to objections. Now, the summarized meaning of this sutra is sevenfold: the basis of discussion, the instigation of discussion, the objects to be fully known, Full knowledge, the fruit of full knowledge, how to fully know it, and the purpose of the sutra. Now, the basis of discussion is the cause of the sutra's arising, and because it is what truly gathers together, it is spoken of completely in order to make one have faith in me. The instigation of discussion is the connection with the occasion for the sake of explaining the sutra. If one speaks without being appropriate to the occasion, all the words will become confused, therefore, in order to prevent the words from becoming confused, it is also completely connected with the occasion. What are the objects to be fully known? They are dependent arising in accordance with the order and not in accordance with the order. Since this is to be known by wisdom, it is called that which is to be fully known. This also shows the nature of defilement, that is, the nature of defilement itself, karma, and life, and the nature of purification, that is, the nature of dependent arising not in accordance with the order. By this very path, one fully knows that, therefore the Dharma of the nature of the path is full knowledge. The fruit of full knowledge is twofold: superior and unsurpassed. Among these, the superior is the four fruits of the asceticism of the Hearers and Nirvana. The unsurpassed is Buddhahood itself. These two show only the limbs to be taken up together with the means. How is that to be fully known? In terms of ultimate truth and conventional truth. That is the meaning of what is to be fully known.

Thus, it is stated in the "Exposition of the Thought Sutra." Moreover, it is explained in order to show the means of obtaining the two fruits of complete knowledge. The purpose is to abandon obscurations and to enter the path of non-abiding nirvana. The path of non-abiding nirvana is, in short, the wisdom and compassion of the Bodhisattvas. Wisdom does not fall into samsara, and compassion does not abandon samsara, and does not fall into nirvana, because the Bodhisattva who abides in dependent origination increases with wisdom, and great compassion arises for sentient beings who are deluded in entering, so entering the path of non-abiding nirvana is its purpose. That path also allows Bodhisattvas to easily abandon the two obscurations, which is also its purpose. Stating the purpose is also to induce listeners to listen respectfully and to accept, etc. The purpose is included in the meaning gathered here, so it is not explained separately. The meaning of the words, the connection, and the answers to objections should be stated, all of which are connected to the text and the following. Among them, with the words "Thus," by praying, a correct collection is made, thereby showing that all the meanings of the Sutra arise from the following, in order to abandon slander and exaggeration. With these two, "I heard," it shows that I heard directly, and not realized, not that I heard directly, but that it came from one transmitted to another. It is only hearing, not realization, because no one other than the Buddha can realize such a meaning. This is also the reason to believe, otherwise, if impossible things are said, they will not be believed. With the words "At one time," it is connected to the previous "heard," time is time or assembly, because at all times and places, such Sutra jewels are very difficult to hear. Or it is connected to the following "At one time, the Bhagavan resided," which shows that due to the infinite activities of taming, at other times, the Bhagavan was elsewhere.
