Thus it is shown to dwell. The name 'Bhagavan' is because he has subdued the four maras and possesses qualities such as freedom. The so-called 'Royal Palace' is the name of a specific city. It is said that in the past, in houses named after kings, non-humans could not harm them, so they were named that way. Therefore, the city is called that. That city is also the chief among all cities. Similarly, this sutra pervades all scriptures, so it is explained here to show its superiority. The Royal Palace is vast, and it is impossible to know where the Blessed One dwells in the Royal Palace, so the name Vulture Peak Mountain is mentioned. Because the top of the mountain is round and piled up like a vulture, it is called Vulture Peak. Mentioning these two places is to benefit those who live at home and those who are ordained, or to show the meaning of the perfection of oneself and others. The so-called Vulture Peak Mountain shows that this sutra is difficult to understand, because it is high. The so-called mountain means that it is not moved by the winds of the heretics, because it is stable and unmoving. The so-called great refers to both number and power, because it has subdued the afflictions and cannot be broken by external attacks. The so-called Sangha of monks means that its power is great. The approximate number shown is one thousand two hundred and fifty, which was the number at that time, that is, when the Blessed One first dwelt in the Royal Palace, he had subdued five hundred attendants of Lotus Light, two hundred and fifty attendants of River Light, two hundred and fifty attendants of Gaya Light, and two hundred and fifty attendants of the noble Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. When explaining the Mahayana Sutra, why are the Shravakas mentioned, and why are they mentioned first? To show that because they are truly gathered, one should trust me, and that the Shravakas will also enter the Mahayana, and to subdue the chief of the retinue, and from that gate to lead his retinue into the Mahayana, and to rely on

It is reasonable to speak of those meditations on liberation as they are common. Why were they mentioned earlier? Because they focus on their own benefit, showing that they always attend upon the Blessed One, and showing that one should respect the ordained. Distinguishing bodhisattvas from the sangha of monks is because they are the main ones in teaching the Mahayana sutras. They are bodhisattvas who have generated the mind of enlightenment. Since the shravakas also have hope for their own enlightenment, the term "great bodhisattva" is mentioned in order to distinguish them, because they possess seven great qualities. Bodhisattvas are called great bodhisattvas. Among them, the great Dharma is the teaching of the Prajnaparamita in One Hundred Thousand Verses, etc., to them, because it is extremely vast. The great generation of mind is because of generating the mind for unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. The great faith is because of having faith in those very profound and vast teachings. The great intention is because of intending to benefit all sentient beings and bring happiness. The great accumulation is because of the immeasurable accumulation of merit and wisdom. The great time is because of attaining enlightenment through three countless eons. The great true accomplishment is because of truly accomplishing unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. "Dwelling" means dwelling in three ways: dwelling by conduct, dwelling by teaching the Dharma, and dwelling by the nature of abiding in inner samadhi, Brahma, gods, and noble ones. The word "dwelling" indicates that one has already dwelt. Mentioning when, where, and with whom one dwells indicates the beginning. Now, the initiation of the topic is explained by "At that time," etc. "At that time" refers to the time when the Blessed One was dwelling. The place where people gather and approach in order to ascertain the Dharma is the place to go. "Where" is a synonym for "in which direction." In order to speak of true accomplishment, those words that generate supreme joy are...
