That which is apprehended as having passed from the state of non-existence into the past is the perception of permanence. Although endowed with the three sufferings, the apprehension of one of them as being of the nature of happiness is the perception of pleasure. These perceptions are the cause of perceiving self and so forth, therefore they have been previously explained. Such various forms of not knowing are the nature of ignorance, since all the collections of afflictions, such as the view of self, arise from the aspect of perversion. That which becomes one part of it is desire and so forth, and that is what it shows. Because of being produced by desire, hatred, and delusion, desire, hatred, and delusion are spoken of in relation to the actions of body, speech, and mind themselves, because they are imputed. "Accompanied by manifest attachment" means desiring sons, wives, and so forth. "Such as this" means those who become disturbed in body and mind, such as those who act as jesters for kings and those who do business. The rest is not explained because it is easy to understand. There, "because of the great darkness, it is ignorance" and so forth show the characteristics of the definitive word. Because it acts as if it were non-existent, it is ignorance. "Because of manifestly constructing" means because of manifestly constructing existence again. "Because of distinguishing" means because of causing to distinguish. "Because of depending" means that by the power of existence, consciousness is sown in this, and because it can become form, therefore it is name and form in order. Therefore, in the sutras also, four abodes of consciousness are spoken of: consciousness that has gone near to form, consciousness that has gone near to feeling, consciousness that has gone near to perception, and consciousness that has gone near to formation. Consciousness does not abide even for an instant without depending, therefore it is said. "Because of being born" means that consciousness causes to be born and increase, therefore it is the source of birth, and because the six sources of birth are gathered, it is the six sources of birth. "Because of contact" means that by its power, objects, faculties, and consciousnesses gather together and are similar to contact. "Because of experiencing" means that with this, previously

Because feeling and experiencing the results of karma, it is feeling. The so-called thirst is also craving due to desiring existence and so on. The so-called approaching and taking is also holding and taking existence, that is, attachment to desires and views, precepts and asceticism, and self is taking. It is also said that in order to generate existence, it is because birth arises from this, so it is existence. The rest are not explained because the words are easy to understand. In order to misunderstand the selflessness of people, the characteristics of ignorance and so on are first shown. Now, in order to misunderstand the two kinds of selflessness, the characteristic of connecting the limbs is said to be "other". That is, not being able to understand the truth of the characteristics of selflessness of people and dharma is ignorance. Although that is not without knowledge, it is said to be ignorance because it knows in a reversed way. It is shown by a different name as knowing in a reversed way. Therefore, attachment to dharmas such as form is also the nature of reversed knowledge, so it is said to be ignorance. From other aspects, the word ignorance is also used to express that. Because it is not without knowledge, therefore, for that reason, this meaning is shown by another name. In order to show the connection of the limbs, it is said that "if there is ignorance". That is, children, because they are attached to self and so on in a reversed way, do a lot of non-meritorious deeds for the happiness of this life, and also do meritorious deeds for the happiness of the future. In order to have neither suffering nor happiness, they also do immovable deeds, which are actions conditioned by ignorance. If it is said that non-meritorious deeds arise from ignorance, so it should be said to arise from ignorance, then meritorious deeds and immovable deeds arise from the roots of virtue such as constant non-attachment, how can they be said to arise from ignorance? That is not a fault. There are two kinds of ignorance, namely the characteristic of being ignorant of cause and effect, and the characteristic of being ignorant of the truth. Among them, the actions arising from the cause of being ignorant of cause and effect are considered to be only non-meritorious deeds.
