By thoroughly training in understanding equanimity, equanimity is shown by other names. To distinguish the ten aspects of one's own benefit, making beings fully mature, this is called an inappropriate reason, because it is shown from the discourse itself, so it is not discussed. The so-called "previously shown" should be understood as before realization. Therefore, having abandoned what should be abandoned by seeing it in this way, on the path of meditation, with the nature of gaining and not gaining, all the dharmas that cause affliction, without being tainted or despised, when practicing virtuous dharmas, abiding in mindfulness, therefore, after that is the entry of mindfulness. As it is stated in the sutra: "In order not to be tainted by all the dharmas of the world." This is what is shown. The afflictions to be abandoned through meditation are desire and anger, as well as pride and ignorance. For what is gained, there is attachment, and therefore it is also tainted, and if not gained, it is harmed. Ignorance is the precursor, therefore it will be tainted by the dharmas of the world. Because it is abandoned, it is not tainted, and it is easy to realize. It should not be understood that they are completely abandoned, because they are only suppressed and cannot exert the power of their own strength. In order to gradually and completely train, it is not desired to completely and without remainder abandon them only on the first bhumi, but on the tenth bhumi they are completely purified. Therefore, entering the path of meditation, and the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment that are beyond the world and without outflows, those themselves are the roots of virtue such as non-attachment. After thoroughly training in those, one will rise from bhumi to bhumi, therefore the entry from bhumi to bhumi is spoken of. Thus, those themselves, the previous state being pure, attain the later state, becoming special, therefore they are called higher. Again, those themselves are called roots of virtue, this is the word "or," in order to show other explanations. Previously, without distinguishing, the factors of enlightenment themselves, non-attachment, etc., were taken as roots of virtue, which is a summary based on a common basis. Now, it is shown what the roots of virtue that are the cause of those are, namely:
