If the earth deity does not allow listening through meaning and words, how could it allow thinking and meditation? This itself is the basis of everything, because it is the root, therefore it is the fundamental entry. What are those others then? They are those that include the entry of summarizing, etc., up to the attainment of Buddhahood. These are also stated in the sutra: 'For the sake of completely gathering all roots of virtue,' etc., as said in nine words, and for the sake of distinguishing, it is said to hold hearing, etc. The first of the ten sets of words is what has already been distinguished. Therefore, because it is to be heard, it is hearing, which is this category of Dharma. Because it is held, all the roots of virtue belonging to it are completely gathered in number, so gathering is the wisdom arising from hearing, because it gathers. That itself is entry, because it is the method of gradually entering the stages. That is also stated in the sutra: 'For the sake of completely gathering all roots of virtue,' this is shown by its own words. In this way, by merely hearing the names of the stages from a virtuous friend, faith, aspiration, and great joy arise, and abiding in the fundamental entry is because they listen to each word, therefore the knowledge arising from hearing is called the entry of summarizing. In this way, having heard those, in order to express them, one distinguishes the aspects conducive to enlightenment, etc., without error, through reasoning. Distinguishing is the arising of expertise in those, therefore the knowledge arising from thinking is called the entry of understanding the meaning, because it symbolizes the meaning. That is also stated in the sutra: 'For the sake of becoming skilled in completely distinguishing all the Buddha's teachings,' this is shown, because the knowledge arising from thinking is the nature of being skilled in completely distinguishing the aspects conducive to enlightenment that are expressed by the stages. When one distinguishes those meanings in this way, one shows those meanings to others with many different names, those names hold their own characteristics, and one understands and fully knows those that are shown as the sound of Dharma with the meaning of holding.

Because the maker, with the wisdom born of thought, this wisdom is supremely excellent, it is the entrance to understanding the Dharma, therefore it can understand the names and aspects of all Dharmas. As it is said in the sutra: "In order to greatly increase the wisdom of the Dharma." The wisdom of the Dharma is to know all Dharmas, how to increase it? That is, it has a vast and many names and aspects of the Dharma, so it can expand. Thus, with the wisdom born of thought, one understands the many meanings of this Dharma, and the names and aspects that can express this meaning, and can make sentient beings fully possess both, so that sentient beings can be matured, so the wisdom born of thought is supremely excellent, it is the entrance to making sentient beings mature. As it is said in the sutra: "In order to show the Dharma of good abiding." Therefore, it can show the Dharma of good abiding in a way that is complete with words and meanings. Therefore, after faith and aspiration and joy have arisen before, then with the wisdom born of hearing and the wisdom born of thought, one understands the meaning, and knows many names and aspects, and makes sentient beings mature with good meaning and good words, at this time it is entering the path of seeing, so the realization of the path of seeing is the entrance to be obtained. It is said in the treatise, how is it to completely practice knowing the equality of all Dharmas? According to this reasoning, only seeing with the aspect of selflessness, so that the Dharmas to be abandoned can also be abandoned, selflessness is the equality of all Dharmas, because it is of one taste, so there is no difference. As it is said in the sutra: "In order to purify the wisdom without difference." What is the purification of the wisdom without difference? It is completely pure, because it is free from the defilements to be abandoned by the path of seeing. The wisdom without difference is also spoken from the gate of the absence of difference in the object, not that many wisdoms are without difference and become one. The absence of difference in the object is emptiness, because all Dharmas are of one aspect there. This is what is said in the treatise
