To discriminate without inherent existence is as it is said in the sutra, "When one discriminates that there is no inherent existence, no arising, and no cessation," that is it. By the very nature of non-inherent existence, it shows that both self and general characteristics are absent. The distinction of abiding in that is the path of non-abiding, because it possesses the distinction of wisdom and compassion. Abiding, the distinction of that, in brief, should be known as twofold. Because it appears as wisdom itself, the gate of wisdom without attachment. How is it? It is said in the sutra that by manifestly accomplishing great compassion and not abandoning the assembly of sentient beings, therefore, manifestly approaching wisdom without attachment is the perfection of wisdom, because it is manifestly realized by the manner of appearance through abiding. Therein, the wisdom of the Tathagata is said to be without attachment. Because wisdom is without accomplishment, the manner of appearance is fully proclaimed. Moreover, samsara and nirvana, because of realizing equality, one does not associate nor abide, because their assembly is not complete. The assembly not being complete is because the assembly of the limbs of enlightenment is not complete. How is that? From the point of possessing such wisdom, up to the point that the limbs of enlightenment are not complete, therefore, one does not abide in that either, because it appears in between. The thirteen samadhis that can be contemplated should be known according to their number; in short, this is an abridgement. The term "with its retinue and samadhis" is its general term. How is that again, with the four conditions, etc.? Focusing on the absence of self in a person, the samadhi called "entering emptiness" will arise, as it is said. Focusing on the absence of self in phenomena, it is said to be "nature." Focusing on the emptiness of grasping, it is said to be "ultimate emptiness." Focusing on the alaya-vijnana in that place, it is said to be "great emptiness." Focusing on the entering consciousness, it is said to be "corresponding emptiness."

It is the first cause. By fully maintaining mindfulness, the foundation is established, because it is said, "What is the aspect of emptiness?" How is it understood? Because of extreme habituation, not knowing satisfaction with meditation, one will not become negligent, this is the second cause. By obtaining the entry of excellence, the seventh is established, because it is said, "What is the manifestation of emptiness?" How is it understood? Because the qualities are proven to obtain the entry of excellence. By the cause itself are the remaining ones, how is it understood? Because it becomes the cause of purifying the obscurations of knowledge, therefore it is said, "What is the non-conceptual emptiness as it is?" How is it understood? Because conceptualization is an obscuration, therefore, through the means of non-conceptualization, one realizes the emptiness of the phenomena of complete imputation, therefore one will be separated from obscurations. Because it becomes the cause of maturing sentient beings, therefore it is said, "What is the emptiness with views?" How is it understood? When meditating on emptiness, because of being separated from compassion, one does not meditate without regard for sentient beings like the Hearers, so what is it? One meditates only with the intention of benefiting sentient beings. Because it becomes the cause of completely holding samsara and nirvana with contemplation, a samadhi called "separation and non-separation emptiness" will arise, thus it is said. How is it understood? Separation from afflictions is separation, what did the teacher say is not associated with all afflictions. Non-separation from samsara and nirvana is non-separation, what did he say is not not associated with the nature of samsara and nirvana. This is the fourth cause, one should know that these establish the distinctions of samadhi. So, what is the unwavering intention? Because of stability, stability is without fear. This also needs to be understood in nine meanings, how is it understood? Because faith arises in the object, therefore it is said, "What is the determined intention?" How is it understood? The object is only suchness, not others. Thus, because of especially arising faith and determination, it is the determined intention. Not being weary of confusion, it is said, "What is the virtuous intention?" Gold
