It is to be free from obscurations. Being bright is for the sake of clarity, because the essence is completely pure. Being radiant and clear is for the sake of being free from afflictions and cognitive obscurations, in that order. If the center of a mirror can be well polished because it shows all the defects and qualities of the face, then it is appropriate to call it bright. But if it does not appear at all, how can it be called extremely refined and bright? It is because it accomplishes all the activities of all sentient beings. Even if it does not appear, but because of its power, the emanation body accomplishes all the activities of all sentient beings, so it is apparent. Therefore, from the perspective of the result, it is bright, radiant, and clear. The center of the mirror is also solely because it becomes the cause of the arising of the wisdom that has that appearance. Therefore, the name is established, otherwise it is not. If it is the cause of the arising of wisdom, then how can its appearance not become different? Because the cause is always close to it and depends on it. Then, how can the images of the arising wisdom not become simultaneous and constant in the minds of all living beings? For example, the center of a mirror depends on the condition of form and becomes the cause of the arising of various images. But it does not become different images, nor does it constantly produce images, because it depends on the condition of form. Similarly, the mirror-like wisdom also depends on the conditions of the time of sentient beings and becomes the cause of the arising of various images of knowable objects, but because it does not become different like blue and so on, its appearance does not change because of the differences. And because it depends on the conditions of the time of the arising of wisdom in sentient beings, it does not simultaneously and constantly produce images of wisdom in all sentient beings. If those wisdoms come, then how do they arise in dependence on it? Or, if they do not come, then how can wisdom be the nature of non-effort with the cause of the arising of non-wisdom? Because the wisdom of the potter and others, which is the cause of the arising of non-pots and so on, is seen to be the nature of effort. For example, the center of a mirror

That which is the cause of cyclic existence and nirvana, "manifold," is manifold itself. That which is called "various" refers to different kinds, which is in relation to the same kind. That which is called "also" refers to a large number. Saying that "one itself" is divided into "manifold" is in consideration of different kinds. And in consideration of the majority, it is said "various and many." For the arising of reflections, the surface of a mirror is the cause, but there is no conceptualization. Similarly, when mirror-like wisdom becomes the cause, "manifold," and so forth, is in relation to the same kind, different kinds, and a large number. Thus, even though images of knowledge arise only in the absence [of something], it is still active, but without conceptualization. It is said here, for example, just as the surface of a mirror, without conceptualization, is the cause for the arising of various reflections, similarly, mirror-like wisdom, without the conceptualization that actively manifests the operations of grasping at a self, grasping at what belongs to a self, and the grasper and the grasped, is the cause for the arising of various images of knowledge. If it is related to the images of knowledge, then because they are different, how is it that they are not different? But if it is unrelated, then how can it be the entity of a cause? For we have not seen that seeds, etc., which are unrelated to the result, are the entity of a cause for sprouts, etc., and rays of sunlight, which are unrelated to limestone, etc., do not become the entity of a means by eliminating them. For example, the surface of a mirror is the cause for the arising of reflections, but because they do not exist before they arise, they are not close, and therefore they are not related to them, because it is impossible for both closeness and non-closeness to exist simultaneously. Nor is it non-close, because they are the entity of the cause for their arising. If it exists, then that which they exist is the connection, because it has become the entity of their cause, so it is also not different. Similarly, mirror-like wisdom is also the cause for the arising of images of knowledge, but it is neither related to them nor un-
