Thus it is said. How so? This is in consideration of the distinctions of the disciples who are immediately present, and thus in some cases, even distinctions are not spoken of. Then, what are desire and so forth? To the question of what is meant by "desire and so forth," here, desire is understood to be the five objects of desire. That is, forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects are the nature of craving that is universally discriminating, and should be relied upon and distinguished, so they are objects of desire. They are called desire because they are desired in this way. Adding the word "view," in the extensive explanation, to view as existent is to view as permanent, and to view as disintegrating is to view as annihilation. Other views that arise through it, in the extensive explanation, "through it" refers to other views that arise through the ways of viewing as existent and viewing as disintegrating, as stated in the Brahma-jala Sutra. The extensive explanation related to it refers to being associated with viewing as existent and so forth, being in accordance with it, and being in agreement with it. Among them, vowing to refrain from what should not be done is discipline, that is, refraining from what should not be done, such as killing. The term "ascetic practices and so forth" includes things arising from the Lokayata and the Jainas, and so on. To say "self," that is, the reason for saying "self" through it, refers to the way of self-view. If asked how one says "self" through it, the answer is that therefore, one who has self-view will say "self," and this is how it is understood and how it is called. To say "self-view is not based," means that it has no object. In other words, even though there is no self with the nature of an agent, enjoyer, permanence, and independence, uneducated ordinary people still cling to "self" through these ways, but the five aggregates of appropriation themselves are not like that, and there is no such "self" other than them, so it is a collection of disintegration.

The view of (I) is established as not having a basis. Regarding the attachment to saying "The five aggregates of grasping are I," the last word is omitted, and it is said as "I," which is to show attachment to saying "I." For example, like saying "saying half," etc., this is omitting the last word of the previous phrase. Question: Why is "saying" mentioned? Answer: This is because it should have been said "I grasping," but it is shown as "saying I am grasping," why is that? Answer: To show that it is merely attachment to "saying." This is how it is determined: If it is shown as "saying I am grasping," then it will become well-known as attachment to I, because one says "I" and is attached to something that does not exist. Therefore, in order to show attachment to merely "saying," "saying" is mentioned. Even though there is no I, merely being attached to that "saying" is being attached to it. Others say that saying "This is I" is saying "I," which is established on a basis. What is that? Therefore, it is said, "Regarding what thing of the body?" Question: Regarding what thing of the body? Answer: Therefore, it is said, "Regarding what is 'I' designated?" Question: Regarding what is 'I' designated? Answer: Regarding the five aggregates of grasping. As the Blessed One said, "However much ascetics and Brahmins correctly see I, and correct views, all of those are regarding these very five aggregates of grasping." If that is the case, would the aggregates themselves become saying "I"? Answer: Because they are the basis for saying "I." If it is said in detail that one is attached to saying "I" regarding those five aggregates, then the Sutra shows that saying "I" is different from the five aggregates of grasping, and not the aggregates themselves. If it is said that because it is the basis for saying "I," the aggregates themselves are saying "I," how is that possible? Answer: There, the combination of words is different, and here it is also different. That is to say, in that Sutra, the combination of words is different. How...
