These refer to the understanding that they are happiness, etc. What is meant by those such as small, medium, and large feelings? From the suffering of suffering, being tormented by great suffering, one understands the feeling of small suffering to be happiness, just as when one is tormented by extremely hot water, one feels that slightly warm water is cold. Being tormented by great suffering, one understands the intermediate feeling to be neither suffering nor happiness. For example, being tormented by the spring sunshine, one feels that the winter sun was neither warm nor cold. One understands the feeling of great suffering to be suffering. What is the nature of the feeling of suffering? It is said in the scriptures that what arises that one desires not to be separated from is caused by the fruit being closely indicated. How does that become suffering? Because there is an understanding that it is a fruit that is incompatible with the feeling of suffering. However, if one says that because small, medium, and large are different, this fruit is also different, then all these feelings will not become suffering, since what arises that one desires to be separated from arises. However, what one relies on that becomes harmful is caused by the agent being closely indicated. How does what one relies on that becomes beneficial become suffering? Because there is a close indication of an agent that is incompatible with it. However, how do the noble ones see it as suffering? It is extensively explained in the scriptures that the noble ones see feelings as suffering because of the nature of the suffering of conditioning. This shows that the general characteristic of all feelings is the nature of suffering, but not its own nature. Therefore, even if the self-nature of feeling has differences, it cannot be established, because there is no difference, and the suffering of conditioning is also of a nature that is in accordance with impermanence. How, through that, does feeling become small suffering, medium suffering, and great suffering?

That which is called "will become" means that if there is no difference from the perspective of the impermanence of formations, then from the perspective of the impermanence of formations, it is not appropriate to say that some are small, some are medium, and some are large. It is reasonable to differentiate between small, medium, and large for the self-nature of suffering, because the causes of self-nature are different. Furthermore, if it is said that formations are only suffering, then, as explained extensively, there would be no sutra called "Three Sufferings," because there would be no pervasive suffering and suffering of suffering. However, for those who say that small, medium, and large are experienced differently and that those are suffering, it should be said: What is the suffering of suffering? What is called great suffering? What is pervasive suffering? If those are the suffering of formations, then it cannot be said that there are three sufferings. If it is said that small, medium, and large are different, then it is called by another name, and the distinctions of small, medium, and large in suffering cannot be established, because there is no difference in the self-nature of suffering. However, if it is said that the suffering of suffering is different, the suffering of formations is also different, and the pervasive suffering is also different, then if all feelings are suffering in that way, the reality of pleasure and neither-suffering-nor-pleasure feelings cannot be established. Whatever is felt, that is where suffering arises, and it will not contradict the sutra of arising, because, Ananda, considering the impermanence of formations and the pervasiveness of formations, whatever is felt, that is where there is suffering. These are the three feelings: pleasure, suffering, and neither-suffering-nor-pleasure, which is the arising of the feeling of suffering.

Aging is suffering. Transformation is happiness. The arising of pleasant feelings is happiness. Abiding is happiness. Transformation is suffering, and so on. In the third dhyana, it becomes possible to realize that there is a subtle feeling of suffering, which is to show the feeling of happiness. The so-called "dhyana with joy and happiness born of seclusion is the first dhyana" is because it has been declared, and because the seeking and examination have been pacified, the mind is completely clear, and the mind becomes one-pointed, so there is no seeking and no examination, the dhyana with joy and happiness born of seclusion is the second dhyana, which has been realized and abided in, because it has been declared. Equanimity, mindfulness, and purity, abiding in happiness, the third dhyana has been realized and abided in, because it has been declared. In order to show the intermediate feeling above it, which is neither suffering nor happiness, the so-called from the fourth dhyana to the peak of existence, happiness has been abandoned and suffering has also been abandoned, because there was no unpleasantness before, so unpleasantness and so on have been abandoned, because it has been declared. How can there be more suffering in the extremely peaceful samadhi? The so-called nature of the lower samadhi is coarser than the nature of the higher samadhi, because it is its antidote. So, how can there be more suffering? The intermediate feeling is neither suffering nor happiness, in order to show that there is no feeling of suffering above the desire realm. However, what the Blessed One said, that the perception of suffering as happiness is inverted, the so-called idea of thinking of happiness is the perception of happiness. Inverted grasping of happiness is also inverted grasping. For the two kinds of suffering, etc., it is said extensively, the two kinds of suffering are the suffering of transformation and the suffering of conditioned existence. For that suffering, because it is not fully recognized as suffering itself, so...
