And, because the support and object of the various consciousnesses are presently arising. Eye and so forth, and the various consciousnesses, are not reasonable as cause and effect entities, just as before, this is because when consciousness arises, those two do not have the power. If it has not arisen, it also does not have the power, this is extensively explained. The two, sense faculty and object, are not, because at the time of consciousness, they do not exist, this is because those two, sense faculty and object, do not exist. Only one has power over it, this means that only consciousness has power over touch. If it is said that consciousness and touch arise together, then, this means, or again, thinking that relying on the previously arisen sense faculty and object, consciousness and touch arise together, consciousness will not become the cause of touch, as previously shown, this is because when touch arises, it does not possess the power of consciousness, and if it has not arisen, it also does not have the power, and so forth. Even so, touch will not be established from the aggregation of the three, because only two have power over it. Some people also say that the aggregation of the three is touch, extensively saying that some people also say that the aggregation of the three, sense faculty, object, and consciousness, is touch, and there is no touch other than the aggregation. The meaning of aggregation is that the three are merely gathered together as cause and effect. It is not agreed that arising together is the cause. So what is it? It is what has arisen previously. Moreover, the two, sense faculty and object, have ceased at the time of consciousness, therefore it is not reasonable as the cause of the sense faculty that produces feeling, this means that relying on the previously arisen moment of sense faculty and object, consciousness arises in the second moment. If when consciousness arises, all three gather together as the nature of cause and effect entities, then, at that time, those two, sense faculty and object, have ceased, therefore touch is not reasonable as the entity of the cause that produces feeling, therefore the condition of touch cannot establish feeling, why is that?

Therefore, the three of them becoming cause and effect are contact, not just consciousness alone, so it is said. The "them" refers to those who say that mere aggregation is contact. The meaning of aggregation is only the things of cause and effect, and the aggregation of three is also simultaneous, or broadly speaking, this is the view of the teacher. How does it arise reasonably? It means that the three of the five arise simultaneously, and the six arise sequentially. How is it like a shadow and a sprout? It means, if asked: What is it? Even if the things of cause and effect arise simultaneously, one is not the cause of the other. The sprout is the cause of the shadow, even if they arise simultaneously, but because that is the form produced as a cause, and there is no different time from the arising of its own great elements, the cause of the sprout is not the shadow. Therefore, it is temporarily determined that even if the three of the five arise simultaneously, they are cause and effect, but one is not the cause of the other. Now, with regard to the three of the six, if asked: How does sequential arising also become the things of cause and effect? The cause does not exist at the time of the effect. Just as the seed and the sprout arise sequentially, but they are cause and effect, and the seed does not exist at the time of the sprout. Why? Because their cessation and arising are simultaneous, so it is said, meaning that the cessation of the seed and the arising of the sprout are simultaneous. The time when the seed ceases is not the time when the sprout arises. If the cause does not exist at the time of the effect, then how will the effect not become something preceded by non-existence? Therefore, combining the context, it is said: How is it not preceded by non-existence, which is not the cause of non-existence? If asked: How is the effect not preceded by non-existence? Therefore it is said: Because that and the effect are simultaneous. This is a synonym for being simultaneous with the cause of non-existence. Those phenomena that have passed for a long time or have not yet come, and so on.
