To. The main cause is the six sense bases, because they are both common and uncommon causes, as mentioned before. This is because it is intended to speak of the main cause. It is taught that contact arises from the cause of the six sense bases, but it is not intended to speak of the definite cause. The six sense bases are the main cause, and so is the mind, which is also shown by being both a common and uncommon cause. As mentioned before, it is from the branch of consciousness how it was previously taught. If form and so on are each a consciousness that can distinguish, why is it asked from eye consciousness to mind consciousness? The answer is that the eye and so on belong solely to the number of sentient beings, and it is further explained that the common and uncommon cause is the main cause. Just as here, even if other things like form are also causes of contact, the six sense bases are the main cause in the production of contact, because they are both common and uncommon causes. The common cause, the eye sense base, is the cause of contact because it is the gathering of the eye that focuses on all forms such as blue. Also, because it is an uncommon cause, it should be explained accordingly up to the mind sense base. Therefore, the six sense bases are also the main cause. Why? Because if it exists, then there must be both object and consciousness, and so on extensively. If it exists, if the six sense bases exist, then there must be both object and consciousness, because there are objects like form, and there is also any consciousness such as eye consciousness. Therefore, it is extensively explained from this, because, from the Sutra on Dependent Arising, the six sense bases are the main cause of the cause. From the doors of the eye and so on, from the contact arising from the gathering of the eye to the contact arising from the gathering of the mind, this is showing contact.

“Through the door of form, etc.” means that from form, sound, smell, taste, etc., from the gathering of form to touch, and even from the gathering of dharma to touch, it is not a display, like the sound of a drum. For example, the drum is the main cause, so it is said to be the sound of the drum, and not the sound of the stick, just like that. The sound of the drum is the main cause of it, also because it is the place of it, and it is a common and uncommon cause. Sticks, etc., also cause the sound of cymbals, etc. Likewise, the six sense bases are the main cause of contact. In the Sutra of Obscuration, it is extensively said that contact depends on these two, and “through the door of different supports and objects” means through the door of different supports and through the door of different objects. In the Sutra of Obscuration, how are the causes of contact said to be two? As it says: Monks, a child is obscured by ignorance, and this body together with consciousness that is associated with craving is established. This body together with consciousness, and the name and form of the future existence, thus there are two. Monks, contact depends on these two. How does this show that contact with support and object are different? Therefore, the body together with consciousness shows the inner six sense bases, and saying the body means saying all five. Thus it is said. Therefore, like this, the feeling that depends on it, like showing that it is the feeling of the body. Thus it is said. This “like this” means “for what reason”. Because it is a part of the body, and depends on the body, and is an accumulation of minute particles, saying the body means saying all five. Saying consciousness is the sense base. The outer name and form are outer, what does it mean? It means showing the six sense bases, thus connecting the sentences. Among them, the eye shows the dharma sense base. Form shows the form sense base, etc. Those two show the inner six sense bases and the outer. It says in that

In the so-called "Sapa" in the Abhidharma-kosa, it is explained in detail that these six sources of contact arise from the difference between internal and external sources, and not from anything else. If asked, what is the intention of what you said? The answer is: Because the six sources are the main cause, it is said that the six sources are the cause; and because of the difference between the support and the object, there is also a difference in contact, so two causes are mentioned. The three causes of contact are also just in accordance with conventional sayings. Therefore, the difference in the intention of explaining these should not be mentioned again later. If asked, why is it established after the six sources? The answer is: This is because the six sources are the cause of contact, and contact is the cause of feeling, so it is said after the six sources. Just as the two sources of body and mind are complete at that time, so they are not established as other limbs, the two of contact and feeling are also complete at that time, so they should not be established as other limbs. If asked, if the six sources are the cause of contact, and contact is the cause of feeling, then why does the Great Cause Sutra say that name and form are the cause? The answer is: The sutra says: Ananda, it should be said that contact is the cause of contact. Ananda, what should be said to be the cause of contact? Ananda, name and form are the cause of contact. There it is said that contact is spoken of by combining resistance and designation, because in the Great Cause Sutra it is said that contact arises from the combination of resistance, which depends on the five colored roots; contact arises from the combination of designation, which depends on the sixth mental root. The combination of eye and so on arises from contact, which depends on the root of resistance, so it is said that contact arises from the combination of resistance. Relying on language to enter into meaning is called designation. Or, the mind that enhances language is called designation. Therefore, the combination of mind arises from contact, which is called contact arising from the combination of designation.
