Having manifestly condensed the previous two terms into one, it is called name and form. Due to name and form, it is called the six sense bases. What are the six sense bases? They are the six internal sense bases, namely the sense base within the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and the sense base within the mind. Due to the six sense bases, it is called contact. What is contact? It is the collection of six contacts, namely the contact arising from the aggregation of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Due to contact, it is called feeling. What is feeling? Feeling is of three types: pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and neither pleasant nor painful feeling. Due to feeling, it is called craving. What is craving? Craving is of three types: craving for desire, craving for form, and craving for formlessness. Due to craving, it is called grasping. What is grasping? Grasping is of four types: grasping for desire, grasping for views, grasping for ethics and vows, and grasping for self-assertion. Due to grasping, it is called becoming. What is becoming? Becoming is of three types: becoming in the desire realm, becoming in the form realm, and becoming in the formless realm. Due to becoming, it is called birth. What is birth? Whatever sentient beings there are, in those categories of sentient beings, whatever birth there is, manifest birth, arising, complete production, obtaining aggregates separately, obtaining elements separately, obtaining sense bases separately, the manifestation of aggregates, the complete arising of the life force, this is called birth. Due to birth, it is called aging and death. What is aging? It is the graying of hair, the wrinkling of skin, the bending of the body, hunching, stooping, swaying, the shrinking of muscles, drooling, heavy breathing, reliance on a cane, dullness and weakness, decline, complete decline, the weakening of the senses, unclearness, the aging of actions, nearing destruction, this is called aging.
