It should be understood that it is only explaining the six consciousnesses. What is eye consciousness? Relying on the eye faculty and being able to separately recognize various forms is eye consciousness. Similarly, for mind consciousness, it should be explained in a corresponding manner. That is, relying on the ear faculty and being able to separately recognize various sounds is ear consciousness. Relying on the nose faculty and being able to separately recognize various smells is nose consciousness. Relying on the tongue faculty and being able to separately recognize various tastes is tongue consciousness. Relying on the body faculty and being able to separately recognize various tactile sensations is body consciousness. Relying on the mind faculty and being able to separately recognize various phenomena is mind consciousness. The eye is the basis for these, therefore, this is relying on the eye and being able to separately recognize various forms. Common and uncommon causes, because it is the main cause, this is called the basis. The eye consciousness, like an image of form, indicates the separate recognition of various forms through the meaning of the appearance of form. If it is said that "separate recognition is eye consciousness," then it becomes an explanation of the common characteristics of all consciousnesses, rather than an explanation of individual characteristics. If it is said that "able to separately recognize various forms," then it will be understood that mind consciousness is also eye consciousness, because it is also a characteristic of separately recognizing various forms. Therefore, it is distinguished by saying "relying on the eye." Feelings and so on also rely on the eye, therefore it is said "separate recognition." These are also individual appearances, therefore, the individual of form, such as the appearance of joy and complete suffering, etc., therefore form is mentioned. If it is not like this, then it cannot be determined what is being recognized. Similarly, for body consciousness, all of these should be explained. Mind consciousness is relying on the mind faculty and being able to separately recognize various phenomena, for this meaning of "relying," it is the same as before. The meaning of separate recognition is, in short, other eye consciousnesses and so on also rely on the mind faculty, but it is not only relying on the mind faculty.

No. Because consciousness relies solely on the mind, therefore the basis also differs from eye consciousness and so on. The object also differs, because it has been explained that "each dharma is separately cognized." Furthermore, if "each dharma is separately cognized" is not mentioned, then there would be a fault with feelings and so on, because they also rely on the mind. If "relying on the mind" is not mentioned, then it would not be possible to determine what the basis is. If it is said that the eye and so on belong only to the number of sentient beings, then what is the matter? From form consciousness to dharma consciousness should not be said. Belonging to the number of sentient beings is to show the things that can be the master, so it should be investigated what those are, and the sixth characteristic related to being the master. Objects such as form both belong to the number of sentient beings and do not belong to the number of sentient beings. If you ask: Because it is the main cause of the common and uncommon causes. The eye and so on belong only to the number of sentient beings, so form consciousness is not explained. It is not explained up to dharma consciousness. Objects such as form and sound are only common causes. The main cause also shows the result, such as the sound of a drum. The common cause is because the eye is the cause of all form consciousness such as blue. Because it is explained that way without the difference of kinds, the moments of the eye root of each consciousness are different. For form, there are both, that is, different shapes and different moments. Here, it is not explained from the perspective of different moments. 《Extensive Commentary on the First Chapter and the Chapter on Distinctions of Dependent Arising》, Volume 5. The so-called common cause is because the eye is the cause of all form consciousness such as blue, what is the matter? This is from the perspective of different shapes. Because form has different shapes.

Even if exhausted, because consciousness is the cause of various different things. The uncommon cause is because it is the cause of consciousness of the same continuum. The so-called form is the cause of consciousness of different continuums, so it is shown to be a common cause. Similarly, one should appropriately explain up to the mind. How to explain? The ear is a common cause because it is the cause of the consciousness of all sounds. The uncommon cause is because it is the cause of consciousness of the same continuum. Similarly, the same should be applied to the nose and so on. The determination of the sense faculty and the object, the determination of consciousness, is explained in detail that the sense faculties such as the eye and the objects such as form are determined as the object and the subject, how can it be uncertain? The object of the eye faculty is form. The embodied one is the eye faculty. Similarly, the object of the body faculty is touch. The subject is the body faculty. The sixth mind, which is the nature of the six consciousnesses, and the two, dharma and non-dharma, are determined as the object and the subject, which is another situation. Why? If it is determined like the eye and so on, then the object of the mind is both the dharma-sphere and non-dharma. If so, then the seven things of the dharma-sphere cannot be established, because the eye and so on, and the form and so on, are all objects of the mind. If it is only the object of the mind, but not the object of the eye and so on, then, even if the five, form and so on, are excluded, the five, eye and so on, and the six aggregates of consciousness, and the seven, feeling and so on, are also its objects, so it will become the dharma-sphere. Therefore, two determinations must be made: it is only the object of the mind, but not the object of the eye and so on, thus excluding form and so on; it is only the object, but not the basis, thus excluding the eye and so on and the six aggregates of consciousness. That
